We are only as blind as we want to be. -Maya Angelou

Today’s independent commentary deals with these people/issues:

  • Democratic National Convention
  • Three Terms
  • Jared Kushner

I was impressed with the way the Democrats handled the first night of the virtual convention. It was very well produced.

There were some great speeches from former Ohio Governor John Kasich, who is a Republican. U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders did a great job of trying to rally his supporters for Joe Biden. The best speech of the night was from former First Lady Michelle Obama.

One moment that set Twitter ablaze was from the daughter of one of President Trump’s 2016 supporters who later died from COVID-19. The Hill reported that she “blistered the president during a speech Monday night as part of the virtual Democratic National Convention.”

Kristin Urquiza said that her father told her before his death that he felt “betrayed” by the president due to his handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

“His only preexisting condition was trusting Donald Trump,” Urquiza said. She added, “Donald Trump may not have caused the coronavirus, but his dishonesty and his irresponsible actions made it so much worse.”

As for Michelle Obama, she said that Trump is “in over his head” and when we look for leadership we get an “utter lack of empathy.” She said, “Being president doesn’t change who you are, it reveals who you are. And who we vote for reveals who we are.”

She cautioned people, “This is not the time to withhold our votes in protest or play games with candidates who have no chance of winning. We have got to vote like we did in 2008 and 2012.”

About midway through her speech, she threw Trump’s words back at him:

So let me be as honest and clear as I possibly can. Donald Trump is the wrong president for our country. He has had more than enough time to prove that he can do the job, but he is clearly in over his head. He cannot meet this moment. He simply cannot be who we need him to be for us. It is what it is.

It is what it is.

There is something mentally wrong with President Donald J. Trump.

Rolling Stone reports:

During a rally in Wisconsin, the president lied to a cheering crowd, telling them that he deserves eight additional years in office because, he falsely claimed, his campaign was spied on in 2016—an assertion his own FBI refuted in a detailed report.

“We are going to win four more years,” Trump said. “And then after that, we’ll go for another four years because they spied on my campaign. We should get a redo of four years.”

Right now it does not look like Trump will win a second term, but now he adds fuel to the rumor that he won’t leave office if he loses.

I suspect he will leave office one way or the other.

Several sources, including Forbes, reported that White House Senior Advisor Jared Kushner said Monday that the U.S. death toll from the virus has been a success story and that Trump administration officials have “done our best.”

Kushner is a cold-hearted bastard.

  1. Results from the Rep.-controlled Sen. Inteligence Committee investigating Russia’s and Trump’s collusion (conspiracy) have been released. It’s not looking good for Dear Leader.

What’s new is the committee has evidence Kilimnik was not only a part of Russian lntelligence, he was involved in the GRU hack of the DNC (detail is redacted). Taken at face value it suggests Manafort, Gates, Deripaska, Stone, Kilimnik were a part of a RU intelligence op.— Zev Shalev (@ZevShalev) August 18, 2020

    • Doug – Thanks. Interesting that this report comes from the Republican-controlled Senate. -JmB
