Welcome – if this is your first time visiting The Western Word, “Thursday Numbers” is my weekly column where I take a look at the numbers in the news (in descending order) and provide commentary sometimes laced with just a little sarcasm.
NOTICE: If you read this column you will probably gain knowledge not found on other websites! You may be able to use this information to impress your family, friends, and co-workers. The information might even be life changing – so consider yourself warned…
This week I write about the lottery, top baby names, unemployment, Hillary’s debt, a groin kick, ticket prices, Starbucks, ending the streak, Wednesday coffee, and much more…
Two tickets purchased in Arizona and Missouri had the winning numbers in the $587.5 million Powerball Lottery drawing Wednesday night.
It’s going to be a very nice Christmas for at least two people…
USA Today reports that, “BabyCenter, a San Francisco-based pregnancy and parenting website, which Thursday released its list of top names for 450,000 babies born in 2012 to moms who registered with the site.”
The top two boys’ names are Aiden and Jackson. The top two girls’ names are Sophia and Emma.
The U.S. Department of Labor reports, “In the week ending November 24, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 393,000, a decrease of 23,000 from the previous week’s revised figure of 416,000.”
These numbers are still not that good…
According to a story in Politico, “Amid speculation that Hillary Clinton might make a run for the presidency in 2016, her husband is taking another swing at shrinking her lingering 2008 campaign debt, which totals $73,000 as of Sept. 30.”
That’s the fine ($30,000) that Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh received for kicking Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub in the groin during a Thanksgiving Day game.
If Suh does not change is style, he may get booted for a few games…
Boston Celtics guard Rajon Rondo’s streak of 37 games with 10 or more assists ended last night after he was ejected in the second quarter of the game against the Nets. Rondo is tied with John Stockton and for second most. Magic Johnson holds to record which is 46 games.
That was a dumb move by Rondo…
If you are planning on attending the game that has the Arizona Cardinals visiting the New York Jets on Sunday then, according to this story (that was published Wednesday), you can get a ticket for $18.
It was $22 this morning…
According to Great Falls (MT) television station KRTV, “Former C.M. Russell standout Josh Huestis posted 10 blocks in Stanford’s 68-57 win over Seattle University on Wednesday night.”
Huestis is a junior…
If you need a ticket to see this Sunday’s game between the Carolina Panthers and the Kansas City Chiefs (in KC), you can obtain a ticket for $8 (as of this morning).
I wonder if Cam Newton will be signing autographs afterwards for Chiefs players…
Bloomberg News is reporting, “Starbucks Corp. (SBUX) has started selling a specialty coffee that costs $7 for a 16-ounce ‘grande’ cup, making it the company’s priciest brew, as customers demand more premium products.”
There are some mornings I could use it…
According to a press release from U.S. Senator Jon Tester, “Montana’s U.S. Senators Max Baucus and Jon Tester welcomed Representative-Elect Steve Daines to their weekly coffee with Montanans in Washington Wednesday.”
I thought their first meeting would be over dinner with Montana steaks from Tester’s roller suitcase…
