Just Football…

So how did you do in your football picks this season? In the Sirius Satellite Radio’s Pigskin Pick ‘em, I finished 1315 out of 10,204 players, which was terrible. Oh well, maybe I can win a pizza from the Papa John’s contest during the playoffs…

So now the football games we’ll get to see have a little more meaning. We have the NFL’s wildcard weekend and a couple of big college games coming up. This weekend is going to be a good one for football fans!

A Real National Champion…

To get us football fans started this weekend this Friday afternoon/night we’ll get to see a real National Champion crowned as Eastern Washington University (EWU) (12-2) plays Delaware (12-2) for the FCS National Championship. That game is set to be televised on ESPN2 at 5:00 p.m. Montana time. The game is played in Frisco, Texas (close to Dallas-Fort Worth).

It seems like forever ago when these teams played in the semi-finals. Eastern last played December 17 and Delaware played December 18. EWU played in the semifinals without All-American running back Taiwan Jones because of a broken foot and word is that Jones will not play Friday night.

I still like EWU’s chances in this game.

…and a Mythical National Champion:

On Monday night we will get to see the mythical major college football National Championship between Auburn and Oregon. Meanwhile, TCU finished their season undefeated (13-0).

I am really not excited about this game because the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) is broken, but I think Auburn will win. It is football so I will watch, of course. It will be a fast-paced game, so don’t blink. Auburn has come back in the second half of some games this year and Oregon tries to wear out their opponents in the second half.

So far there have been four BCS games this year and two were close and two were blow outs.

NFL Playoffs – The Wildcard Weekend:

There are four NFL games this weekend to keep your football spirits soaring…and we get to watch them all!

Don’t forget there’s a new NFL playoff overtime rule in effect:

-Both teams must have the opportunity to possess the ball once during the extra period, unless the team that receives the opening kickoff scores a touchdown on its initial possession, in which case it is the winner.

-If the team that possesses the ball first scores a field goal on its initial possession, the other team shall have the opportunity to possess the ball. If [that team] scores a touchdown on its possession, it is the winner. If the score is tied after [both teams have a] possession, the team next scoring by any method shall be the winner.

– If the score is tied at the end of a 15-minute overtime period, or if [the overtime period’s] initial possession has not ended, another overtime period will begin, and play will continue until a score is made, regardless of how many 15-minute periods are necessary.

Saturday:

Saints at Seahawks (2:30 p.m. Montana time on NBC)

The Saints should win this game, but you never know. The Saints are hurting at running back but they are playing the 7-9 Seahawks ya know…

Jets at Colts (6:00 p.m. Montana time on NBC)

This is a classic Saturday night fight! The Colts have been playing well recently, but don’t count out the Jets. I am picking the Colts. The Jets were beaten by the Colts last year in the playoffs and the Colts went to the Super Bowl.

Sunday:

Ravens at Chiefs (11:00 a.m. Montana time on CBS)

Arrowhead is a tough place to play. They play outside on real grass. The Chiefs are 7-1 there this season. If the Chiefs play like they did in front of a national television audience on Monday Night Football against the Chargers, watch out. Of course, I am a Chiefs fan so I am picking them to win it. The Chiefs have done much better than most people predicted this season, so they really have nothing to lose by going all out in this game.

Packers at Eagles (2:30 p.m. Montana time on FOX)

This is probably the hardest game to pick. Eagles coach Andy Reid does well early in the playoffs. Although the Packers won earlier this year, I think the Eagles will win this time.

Here are my picks:

Eastern Washington over Delaware

Auburn over Oregon

Saints over the Seahawks

Colts over the Jets

Chiefs over the Ravens

Eagles over the Packers

Have a great football weekend!
