By now everyone has heard that Naval Captain (O-6) Owen Honors was relieved of duty for showing his crew videos that some people deemed “raunchy.”
His career is basically over.
Captain Honors was the Executive Officer (XO) on the USS Enterprise in 2006-2007 when the videos (called XO Movie Night) were played on board the aircraft carrier. Honors was then promoted to Commander of the USS Enterprise and that was the position in which he was relieved of duty.
Someone recently (this is 2011) leaked the videos to a newspaper in Virginia and that is when it became a problem – mostly in the civilian world – and then since some civilians (also called politicians) have a say over our military it became a political problem.
I watched the videos. I don’t think Captain Honors can make it as an actor and there won’t be any Oscar nominations coming his way. I served over a decade in the military and I’ve seen better videos and I have seen a lot worse. Sure, some of the parts were inappropriate and a little raunchy, but we live in a politically correct (PC) world these days so someone had to pay the price because there were parts of the videos that were not in line with the PC police.
And we all know how tough the PC police can be…
One must wonder if anyone complained back in 2006-07 about the content of the XO Movie night. If so, one would think that they would have been stopped.
Captain Honors is a Naval Academy graduate. His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. He was a fighter pilot and attended “Top Gun” school so he had the fighter jock demeanor that some love and some can’t stand.
Somebody (maybe someone like Goose in Top Gun) should have said to Captain Honors, “No. No, XO, this is not a good idea.” Or maybe one of his fellow officers could have said, “Son, your ego is writing checks your body can’t cash!”
It doesn’t appear anyone thought twice about it.
The Great Falls Tribune (a newspaper in a military town) did an unscientific on-line poll asking, “Should the Navy have removed Capt. Owen Honors for showing his crew raunch[y] videos several years ago?” 44% of the folks responded “Yes” and 56% responded “No.” 764 people participated.
I have to agree with the “No” votes. A reprimand would have been better. The United States has spent millions of dollars training this man – from his time in the Naval Academy to his training U.S. Naval Fighter Weapons School to the Commander of the most well-known aircraft carrier sailing the world.
Talk to me, Goose…
