Thursday Numbers

There is nothing so powerful as truth, and often nothing so strange. – Daniel Webster

Welcome to “Thursday Numbers!” In case you’re a first-time visitor, this is the weekly column where I take a look at the numbers that are in the news (in descending order) and provide commentary sometimes sprinkled with sarcasm.

This week’s topics include Greg Gianforte, Facebook, poop train, Ryan Zinke, Denise Juneau, unemployment, snow, Donald Trump, RGIII, and much more!

NFL 2015: My Predictions

Are you ready for some football? You still have time to purchase that new television! This is also a good time for my annual reminder to put new batteries in your remote control!

Please Note: I have written this column at a sixth grade level so Broncos, Raiders, and Chargers fans can understand it.

The NFL season kicks off Thursday night with the New England Patriots hosting the Pittsburgh Steelers. The game will be televised on NBC.

If you follow me on Twitter or read this blog very much, you know that I am a life-long Kansas City Chiefs fan. Last year we (Chiefs) missed the playoffs. I don’t know if head coach Andy Reid is the person to get the Chiefs to the promised land or not. Most folks, me included, don’t have the Chiefs making the playoffs this season. I think the Chiefs will be fortunate to get back to 9-7. Plus, the Chiefs gave up a home game to play in London. Freaking LONDON.

Now on to the predictions…

DISCLAIMER: I am a professional football watcher so be careful if you try this at home.

I have always been pretty bad at predicting who will win each division in the NFL, but in 2014 I did pick five of the six AFC playoff teams correctly. As for the NFC in 2014, I picked three of the six playoff teams correctly.

So I am feeling pretty good about this year’s predictions.

I did correctly pick last season’s Super Bowl winner – the New England Patriots.

So here goes – and this is not for the faint-hearted. I’ve read the stories, checked the schedules, read what the teams and the fans are saying and here are my predictions for the National Football League’s 2015 season:

Playoffs…PLAYOFFS?

For many people the fact that your NFL team’s season is over won’t set in until next week when your team is not playing.

For twelve teams, the journey continues.

The Patriots, Broncos, Steelers, Colts, Bengals, and Ravens made the playoffs for the AFC. The Seahawks, Packers, Cowboys, Panthers, Cardinals, and Lions made the playoffs for the NFC.

2011 NFL Predictions: The American Football Conference

Growing up a Kansas City Chiefs fan let me have just a little excitement when Lenny Dawson led them to a Super Bowl victory way back in January 1970 – of course there were the “Marty Years” (1989-1998) in which we won a lot of games, put fans in the seats, but did not get to the Promised Land.  Last year there was some joy – the Chiefs contended and made the playoffs.

I guess the only big question left to be answered is which will come first: another Chiefs Super Bowl victory or my death?  This year the Chiefs reap the benefits of being the 2010 AFC West Champions – three primetime night games – and a much tougher schedule!

The AFC is where my heart is and my team is the Kansas City Chiefs. That will never change!  So this year I start off with my predictions for the American Football Conference.

Here’s hoping your team has a great year and you have something to talk about after Christmas…like the playoffs!  (more…)

Just Football…

So how did you do in your football picks this season? In the Sirius Satellite Radio’s Pigskin Pick ‘em, I finished 1315 out of 10,204 players, which was terrible. Oh well, maybe I can win a pizza from the Papa John’s contest during the playoffs…

So now the football games we’ll get to see have a little more meaning. We have the NFL’s wildcard weekend and a couple of big college games coming up. This weekend is going to be a good one for football fans!

A Real National Champion…

To get us football fans started this weekend this Friday afternoon/night we’ll get to see a real National Champion crowned as Eastern Washington University (EWU) (12-2) plays Delaware (12-2) for the FCS National Championship. That game is set to be televised on ESPN2 at 5:00 p.m. Montana time. The game is played in Frisco, Texas (close to Dallas-Fort Worth).

It seems like forever ago when these teams played in the semi-finals. Eastern last played December 17 and Delaware played December 18. EWU played in the semifinals without All-American running back Taiwan Jones because of a broken foot and word is that Jones will not play Friday night.

I still like EWU’s chances in this game.
