Caught My Eye…

Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out. – John Wooden

Welcome to the big show! Hey – take your mask off, it’s not Halloween just yet…

If you are a first-time visitor, “Caught My Eye” has been posted here every Friday morning since October 2010! This column is where I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week. Sometimes I throw in a touch of snarkiness to make you smile – or to irritate you just a little – maybe both.

Today I write about the budget and debt deal, Paul Ryan, the CNBC debate, Bernie!, Barry Beach, Lions & Chiefs in London plus daylight saving time and Halloween, Mizzou football, and we have a winner who is Making Montana Proud!

NFL’s Wildcard Weekend: Epic Failure

I watch a lot of football and this NFL’s Wildcard Weekend was something to behold with three games being snoozers and one game possibly having the outcome changed by the officials.

During Saturday’s game between Arizona Cardinals and the Carolina Panthers, I found myself hoping the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell would walk out to midfield and call the game because of poor play, shoddy officiating, and terrible announcing by ESPN’s Mike Tirico.

Little did I know that substandard officiating would play a big role in the Detroit/Dallas game late Sunday afternoon.

Goodell should tell his private pilot to get the jet ready for a trip to Detroit today to apologize to the Lions and their fans for what was done to their team on Sunday.

Here is what happened, courtesy of ESPN:

For many people the fact that your NFL team’s season is over won’t set in until next week when your team is not playing.

For twelve teams, the journey continues.

The Patriots, Broncos, Steelers, Colts, Bengals, and Ravens made the playoffs for the AFC. The Seahawks, Packers, Cowboys, Panthers, Cardinals, and Lions made the playoffs for the NFC.

This week I write about the Powerball jackpot, NASCAR, unemployment, Ndamukong Suh, the new Corvette, alligator hunting, my 2000th column, A Day on the Farm, beer at NFL games, government shutdown blame, drunken horseback riding, Obamacare support, Congressional approval ratings, Saturday Night Live, Jurassic Park 4, recall election, and much more so be sure to read on!

Just Football…

Another week of football is in the books and, sadly, I went 9-4 for the week on my NFL pick contest.  That means no free pizza for me.

Just about every Tuesday during football season, I take a look at some of the NFL teams, major college and FCS games and also throw in a few pieces of info you won’t get anywhere else.

This week we take a look at a couple of birthdays, the handshake, the 1929 Packers, beer prices, the BCS, a place for scores, and much more! (more…)

Just Football…

Just about every Tuesday during football season, I take a few minutes to write about my favorite sport, football.  For those wondering, I did play the game and as the years go by, I think I was better than I really was…

Now I look at the game from a fan’s point of view.

Last week was a tough one for me in my NFL football pick contest – I ended up getting only nine correct out of the 13 games – way behind in wins to get a free pizza.  Somebody from Montana picked all 13 correctly and won last week’s contest both locally and nationally.  Congrats.  This week is a whole new week!

This week in the NFL section I take a look at the Lions, Packers and the Bears, the Chiefs, Tebow and the Broncos, winless teams, a FedEx Air Player of the week nominee, and a NFL birthday.  In the college football section, I look at the Big 12, a firing, an unsportsmanlike penalty, the Griz, the Cats, and the Frontier Conference.  Here we go… (more…)

2011 NFL Predictions: The National Football Conference

Last season the NFC’s Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl and put away the “Favre curse” once and for all.  So, the Packers get to start the regular season on Thursday, September 8 (8:30 Eastern) by hosting the New Orleans Saints.  Kid Rock, Lady Antebellum, and Maroon 5 will help “kick off” the season (at 7:30 Eastern).  It’s on NBC.

This just in:  President Obama will give a speech that night, too.

The Philadelphia Eagles are the Miami Heat of the NFL.  There will be much love and much hate for the Eagles this season, but one thing for sure is that Michael Vick is loving his second $100 million contract of this lifetime.  There are questions about him staying healthy, but just about every NFL team will see a drop-off in their offense if their starting QB goes down.

So I’ve read the stories, checked the schedules, read what the teams and the fans are saying and here are my predictions for the National Football Conference for the 2011 season. Remember – your team is undefeated right now! (more…)
