Caught My Eye…

With next Friday being Christmas and the Friday after that being New Year’s Day, this will be the last “Caught My Eye” of 2015. This is the 279th “Caught My Eye” of all time.

Football: It’s Almost Over

The major college football season ended last night with Auburn beating Oregon for the mythical Bowl Championship Series (BCS) National Championship.

It was an entertaining game to watch. The 30+ days the teams had off showed as both teams were a little shaky in the scoreless first quarter.

I watched most of the 35 bowl games. Many were competitive and many had a lot of empty seats. About 32 of them were televised on the ESPN/ABC networks.

Just Football…

So how did you do in your football picks this season? In the Sirius Satellite Radio’s Pigskin Pick ‘em, I finished 1315 out of 10,204 players, which was terrible. Oh well, maybe I can win a pizza from the Papa John’s contest during the playoffs…

So now the football games we’ll get to see have a little more meaning. We have the NFL’s wildcard weekend and a couple of big college games coming up. This weekend is going to be a good one for football fans!

A Real National Champion…

To get us football fans started this weekend this Friday afternoon/night we’ll get to see a real National Champion crowned as Eastern Washington University (EWU) (12-2) plays Delaware (12-2) for the FCS National Championship. That game is set to be televised on ESPN2 at 5:00 p.m. Montana time. The game is played in Frisco, Texas (close to Dallas-Fort Worth).

It seems like forever ago when these teams played in the semi-finals. Eastern last played December 17 and Delaware played December 18. EWU played in the semifinals without All-American running back Taiwan Jones because of a broken foot and word is that Jones will not play Friday night.

I still like EWU’s chances in this game.

BCS: They Did It Again

It seems just about every year I write about the upcoming college football bowl games with disappointment. This year is no different.

I am in favor of a playoff system for major college football, but they don’t have one and since they don’t have playoffs, it would be nice if they made the five BCS bowl games more interesting.

There are three undefeated teams going into the bowl season, Auburn, Oregon and TCU. TCU was left out of the championship game. So there’s a chance we’ll have two undefeated teams at the end of the bowl season.

The BCS bowl games are the five “big money” games in college football. One would hope the top 10 teams would play each other in these five BCS games: one versus two, three versus four, and so on. Not so fast my friend…there’s money involved and conferences have deals with bowl committees and that is where it is all screwed up. Continue reading →
