Monday Morning Politics

Welcome to Monday Morning Politics!  This is where I take a look at some of the political stories from the weekend and put them in one place for your viewing pleasure – I also add some commentary.

Since we’re getting close to Turkey Day, it looks like the folks in Washington, D.C., will be serving up some turkey to all of us this week with the possible failure of the supercommittee to reach a deal.

In this week’s Monday Morning Politics, I write about the supercommittee, defense and donuts, guns, homeland security, the first female senator, Saturday Night Live, and much more!

Caught My Eye…

Congratulations readers – you’ve made it to another Friday (a cold one in Montana).  You deserve to take a short break and catch up on the news and commentary via The Western Word’s “Caught My Eye” (Psst…your boss is probably reading it, too).

The “Caught My Eye” column has been posted here for 69 weeks, and it’s where I take a look at some of the stories in the news that I did not have time to write a full column about and offer some commentary – sometimes I add a little sarcasm.

Today I take a look at Castro and Congress, the Supercommittee, a local newspaper’s dilemma with comments, Jonestown, I crack open my political inbox, I look at a gift, and I salute the Occupy folks in Great Falls.  So read on… Continue reading

Caught My Eye…

Happy Friday – we made it again!  Summer vacations are winding down and school starts soon – what a freaking bummer – but we do have about three weekends left before “the end.”

For the new folks, Caught My Eye is the (almost) award-winning weekly column where I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week.  I offer some brief comments about the stories and sometimes add just a touch of sarcasm!

This week I talk about the Iowa debate, the Downpour Music Festival, I check the e-mails in my political inbox, I comment about rural air service, talk about the supercommittee and much more!  So please read on… Continue reading

Super Max – Super Committee

Who’s the cat that won’t cop out…when there’s danger all about?  MAX!  Right On!

OK, maybe the theme song from Shaft goes a little too far in describing Montana’s Max Baucus and his career in the United States Senate – way too far – Baucus is really not cool at all.

Nonetheless, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has picked Montana’s Max and two other senate democrats (Patty Murray, John Kerry) for spots on the new Super Committee.  They will join nine others in cutting $1.5 trillion from the federal budget before Thanksgiving.  The Super Committee needs seven votes to pass anything – Max Baucus could easily be that seventh vote.

Baucus was “working” at a market in Billings on Tuesday when word came that he was Harry Reid’s man.  Baucus took time out from stacking the grocery shelves with yogurt to issue a statement saying, “I’m humbled to be appointed to the committee to help tackle this critical issue for Montana and the American people.” Continue reading

Thursday Numbers

For the past several Thursdays, the staffers here at The Western Word (TWW) have come up with some numbers to let you know the pulse of America.  This week the numbers are kind of depressing – so be prepared!

Today we take a look at food stamps, unemployment, Spenditol views, vacations, some polls, a supercommittee, a camp in Montana for rich people, a set list, and much more so read on! Continue reading
