The way we treat people we strongly disagree with is a report card on what we have learned about love, compassion, and kindness. – Marc & Angel Chernoff
Covington Catholic High School is a private, all-male, high school in Park Hills, Kentucky. It has between 500-600 students.
In case you missed it, videos surfaced of dozens of Covington students in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington after the March for Life, chanting as they do at games, wearing “Make America Great Again” hats and appearing to be in a standoff with an elderly Native American man. (NY Times)
Some reports said the students were mocking participants of the Indigenous Peoples March.
The spotlight grew so bright that the school issued a statement apologizing saying the “behavior is opposed to the Church’s teachings on the dignity and respect of the human person.” The school also said they would investigate and take appropriate action up to and including expulsion.
Those on the left went wild in condemning the students.
The NY Times reported more videos later emerged complicating the story, showing that the encounter had been preceded by African-American protesters, who identified themselves as Hebrew Israelites, shouting slurs at the students.
Did the new videos complicate the matter? I’ve watched a bunch of videos and read opinions from different sides of the fence regarding the issue. My opinion of the matter has been unchanged from the beginning – the Covington Catholic High School boys acted inappropriately and their adult chaperones should have stepped in and stopped them from being racist assholes.
Those on the right and their right-leaning publications came to the rescue of the boys wearing the MAGA hats. I posted some of the stories on my personal Facebook Page. Some conservatives posted opposite stories from their “sources” for news.
I wonder how those on the right would have responded if the Covington boys were not wearing “MAGA” hats and chanting, “Build the wall.”
The spotlight is shining brightly on Covington Catholic. It seems we are learning more and more about this school and what they allow their students to get away with. It’s not good, in my humble opinion. There may be more uncovered as the spotlight continues to shine.
We have a President who the Covington boys admire who throws around the name “Pocahontas” to slur Elizabeth Warren. Trump’s use of the racial slur has been denounced by many Native American groups – but he continues to use it.
Not unexpected, Trump has come to the rescue of the Covington boys on Twitter.
Some Covington Catholic students are saying their lives have been threatened. Threats are the wrong way to address the issue.
Nevertheless, I think the student who stood a few inches from the Native American veteran with a smirk on his face with his friends behind him crossed the line. It was disrespectful.
Here’s the bottom line – We have learned from the Covington incident that it is 2019 and we can pretty much tell who the racists, bigots, and homophobes are by the hats they wear…
