This is Good/This is Bad

Fear of something is at the root of hate for others, and hate within will eventually destroy the hater. – George Washington Carver

Today I take a little different look at some of the stories I’ve recently read – dividing them into “This is Good” and “This is Bad” categories.

The topics today are veterans, President Trump, healthcare, a Facebook post, the National Anthem, and fallen soldiers. You’ll have to read the column to see which is good or bad. Enjoy!

The Commander-in-Chief and Bergdahl

It was disclosed yesterday that U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl would be pleading guilty to desertion and to endangering the American troops sent to search for him.

The New York Times reports that the guilty plea could mean a five-year sentence for the desertion charge, and the charge of endangering troops carries a potential life sentence. He is due to be sentenced October 23.(WaPo)

I’ve written several posts about Bowe Bergdahl here at The Western Word. I wanted to see a full investigation into the matter before jumping to conclusions.

Leading up to the last Presidential election, Donald Trump should have toned down his hatred toward Bergdahl (not to mention others who were captured) and wait for answers. Of course, Trump did not.

Wednesday Commentary: Government Travel

Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have a right to do and what is right to do. – Potter Stewart

You’ve probably heard about the members of the Trump Administration having problems with travel. Some are acting like a teenager with a new car and daddy’s credit card. So far, there are four who are under scrutiny for their travel.

Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price resigned. There should be more resignations because the folks who are screwing up all know better.

The latest mess deals with the head of the Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary, David Shulkin, who reportedly cruised the Thames, took in sight-seeing at Westminster Abbey, and watched a Wimbledon tennis match during a 10-day European trip with his wife. The trip was half business, half pleasure. (Fortune)

Montana’s own Ryan Zinke, who is now the Department of Interior Secretary, is one of the four cabinet members who are having some problems with travel.
