Thursday Numbers

If you don’t have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over? – John Wooden

Welcome to “Thursday Numbers!” In case you’re a first-time visitor, this is the weekly column where I take a look at the numbers that are in the news (in descending order) and provide commentary sometimes sprinkled with sarcasm.

This week’s topics include paying Iran, fundraising, the governor’s plane, unemployment, grants for tribal libraries, the earthquake in Italy, National Park Service, Hope Solo, and much more!

1,300,000,000

The Associated Press reported this week that the Obama administration said Wednesday it paid $1.3 billion in interest to Iran in January to resolve a decades-old dispute over an undelivered military sale, two days after allowing $400 million in cash to fly to Tehran.

Great googly moogly…

18,000,000

Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton raised $18 million on a three-day trip through California, or roughly $270,000 an hour. (AP)

That’s what August is for on the old campaign trail…

2,000,000

Republican candidate for Montana Governor, Greg Gianforte, says if the governor’s plane was sold the state could save $2 million over the biennium. (GF Tribune)

I will write more about “plane-gate” Friday in my “Caught My Eye” column.

844,000

The Steve Bullock for Montana Governor campaign sent a fundraising email telling supporters that his opponent, Greg Gianforte, just put another $844,000 into his television ad buy, bringing his total TV spending up to $2.7 million through Election Day.

After the Labor Day holiday, people will start paying more attention to politics…

348,357

In a press release, U.S. Senator Steve Daines announced $348,357 in funding for seven Montana tribes to support their existing library operation and to maintain core library services.

Libraries are very important…

261,000

That’s how many people filed new claims for unemployment last week. (USDOL)

247

As of this morning, that’s the death toll from Wednesday’s powerful earthquake in Italy. (AP)

Please join me in praying for Italy.

100

The National Park Service turns 100 years old today (Thursday). To celebrate this anniversary, all national parks will be free to visit from August 25-28. (Source)

Don’t pet or feed the animals, please…

75

That’s how many days there are until Election Day 2016 (Nov. 8, 2016).

ESPN reported that USA Goalkeeper Hope Solo has been suspended six months from the national team for what U.S. Soccer called “conduct that is counter to the organization’s principles.” After the United States was eliminated from the Rio Olympics earlier this month in a penalty shootout, the 35-year-old Solo criticized the winning Sweden team, calling it “a bunch of cowards.”

U.S. Soccer was correct to suspend Solo.

  1. You owe it to your readers to expand on the first bit on Iran payment. It is misleading or confusing. The money was ordered to be paid by international court. Sure, timing helped free captives sooner. Is that a bad thing. No. If it hadn’t been done, folks would be critical because captives weren’t freed soon enough.

    • Janet – Thanks for your comments. The paragraph does state that the USA “paid $1.3 billion in interest to Iran in January to resolve a decades-old dispute over an undelivered military sale” which seems to tell what the payment was about. -JmB
