A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing. – George Bernard Shaw
Welcome to the big show to end the week “Caught My Eye” (CME)!
If you are a first-time visitor, CME is posted right here every Friday morning. This is when I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week. I often throw in a touch of sarcasm to make you smile – or to irritate you just a little – maybe both.
Topics this week include Gianforte & Bullock & that darned plane, the House debate, making the ballot, Three Things You Should Do, Montana Sports coverage, College Football kickoff, and much more!
MT Gov Plane-Gate:
Republican candidate for Montana Governor, Greg Gianforte, held a press conference this week on the steps of the capitol where he said that his opponent, Governor Steve Bullock, had abused the privilege of using the state plane. Gianforte said that Bullock should sell it.
Yes, Gianforte said Bullock should sell that damned state plane – just get rid of it. Gianforte was considerate enough to provide a classified ad for Bullock to use to sell the plane.
I’ll admit that the classified ad was cute, but the funniest part of the whole deal to me was when it was reported that Bullock was using the state plane that very day – to fly about 50 miles from Helena to Deer Lodge for a meeting.
Maybe it was a coincidence. Maybe it was brilliant campaign work. Nonetheless, this little battle was won by Team Gianforte. #Winning
The Montana media picked up on the story, and I saw it in several newspapers and local news stations. The Democrats responded. The Great Falls Tribune asked readers “Do you think the governor should sell the state’s airplane?” In today’s print edition the results are: 40% said yes, 24% said no, and 36% said there are more important issues to discuss.
The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reported that Gianforte actually owns his own plane, but his spokesperson said if Gianforte is elected and uses it for state business he will not seek reimbursement from the state.
One other thing – I suggest that the next time Bullock is out and about doing state “business” with the plane, that he have his pilot fly low over Gianforte’s house a couple times…
“Tower, this is Ghost Rider requesting a flyby…”
Let’s Get Ready to…Debate:
In case you forgot, the first U.S. House debate for Montana’s lone House seat is scheduled for this Monday (August 29) in Frazer on the Fort Peck Reservation at 7:00 pm at the school. (Glasgow Courier)
The debate is between incumbent Republican Ryan Zinke, Democrat Denise Juneau, and Libertarian Mike Fellows, although the Glasgow Courier reported (Aug. 24) that Fellows had not yet confirmed his participation.
Making the Ballot:
The Montana Secretary of State announced that two more candidates for President made the 2016 election ballot here in Montana: Jill Stein of the Green Party and Rocky De La Fuente of the American Delta Party.
They join Democrat Hillary Clinton, Republican Donald Trump, and Libertarian Gary Johnson.
Is this a great country or what? Merica!
