Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost. – John Quincy Adams
It’s hump day – and a big day for political news! Today is another one of those days in which there are several major stories out there that I want to comment about – so it’s another “Political Odds & Ends” day!
Today’s topics include:
- Montana Action Alert
- Montana Governor’s Race
- Primary/Caucus Analysis
- NRSC & Tammy Duckworth
- Obama & Reagan’s Funeral
Montana Action Alert:
Sometimes when I read emails sent or forwarded to me, I wonder how some people could be so stupid to believe them. It’s kind of the same way I feel about some of the dumb things people post on Twitter and Facebook they think are true.
The case in point is called “Montana Action Alert” from “Act for America” which contained this statement:
After the recent terror attacks in Paris and the revelation that at least two of the terrorists had entered France as refugees, 31 U.S. Governors have made the safety of their states a top priority and took bold, decisive action to oppose refugee resettlement in their states.
In contrast, Montana Governor Steve Bullock released a contradictory statement saying that security was a priority but state officials are “reviewing the process of accepting refugees”. Call now and tell Governor Bullock: No Unvettable Refugees
The folks who sent this email are probably trying more to defeat Bullock in November than caring about their safety or even about refugees. Like I have written before, if the people running organizations like Act for America did just a little research they would find that the refugees are thoroughly vetted. It sometimes takes from 18-24 months for them to get into the USA because of the vetting process.
Most of us would probably feel safer around the refugees than we would around the folks running some of these wacko groups.
Montana Governor’s Race:
We now have Democrats Steve Bullock/Mike Cooney and Republicans Greg Gianforte/Leslie Robinson as the lone candidates for Governor and Lt. Governor.
If there are other candidates, they have until Monday, March 14, at 5:00 p.m. to file.
As for the addition of Robinson, a long-time Hi-Line rancher and a Phillips County Commissioner to Team Gianforte, a poll here at The Western Word asked “Are you happy that Greg Gianforte selected Lesley Robinson to be his running mate?”
The results: 45% answered, yes, 24% answered, no, and 19% answered, maybe – I will wait and see. Another 11% answered that they did not care. Thanks to all who participated.
I asked a few friends about Gianforte’s pick of Robinson and the responses were mixed. One person said it was probably for the agriculture vote, female vote, and the eastern Montana/Hi-Line vote. Another said they thought she would be too quiet/shy for such a high-profile position. One person said that she might be pushed around pretty easily.
I don’t know if I ever met Robinson in my travels or not, and I don’t know if it was a great pick or not. One thing for sure is that Bullock and Cooney have the name recognition in this little contest.
One selling point for the Bullock/Cooney team is that the Montana Legislature will probably stay in the hands of the GOP. If Montanans don’t want to see a bunch of extreme right-wing bills signed into law, they should vote for Bullock/Cooney so there is, at least, some compromise. On the other hand, if you feel the extreme right-wing bills being introduced should be signed into law, then it looks like Gianforte/Robinson would be your team.
Although both sides will trade jabs throughout the contest, it appears the Montana Governor’s race 2016 is shaping up to be a snoozer.
The big news of the night is that U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders upset Hillary Clinton in Michigan. Democrats competed in Mississippi and Michigan. Clinton won Mississippi.
Republican Donald Trump says that $38 million was spent to defeat him this week – mostly by establishment/elite Republicans. He ended up taking three of the four GOP contests Tuesday night. Ted Cruz took the other state.
Trump won Mississippi, Michigan, and Hawaii. Cruz won Idaho. Trump increased his lead in the delegate count.
As for the establishment candidate, Marco Rubio, he finished fourth in Mississippi, fourth in Michigan, third in Idaho, and third in Hawaii. He did not win any delegates Tuesday night. Zero delegates. Nothing.
Last week I said that Rubio was toast and that he should quit. It’s embarrassing.
By the way, Rubio was endorsed by Montana’s junior Senator, Steve Daines, and several other establishment Republicans in Montana.
It was a tough night for the establishment/elite Republicans, and Fox News. Mitt Romney was also a big loser. He did anti-Trump robo-calls.
There are a few minor contests (like Wyoming) coming up this week. Next Tuesday we have the GOP “winner take all” contests in Florida, Ohio, and Illinois. There are also contests in Missouri and North Carolina. Check out the schedule HERE.
NRSC & Tammy Duckworth:
Politico reported that the National Republican Senatorial Committee tweeted Tuesday that Illinois Senate Democratic candidate Tammy Duckworth, “has a sad record of not standing up for our veterans.”
Unfortunately, Duckworth lost both her legs while serving in the Iraq War.
If you have read my columns very much, then you already know that I think the folks who work at the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) are a bunch of morons. I’ve seen them screw up a perfectly good campaign just by getting involved. Many of the employees there are hand-picked and most are probably relatives of rich donors who want their kids and grandkids to have the D.C. experience.
The head of the NRSC, U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, owes Tammy Duckworth an apology.
Obama & Reagan’s Funeral:
Conservatives are upset that President Obama will not be attending the funeral for former First Lady Nancy Reagan this Friday.
They would probably be pissed if he did attend, because they hate Obama so much that no matter what he does, they are blinded by their hatred.
The Young Conservatives posted a story about it saying:
Say what you will about President Obama, but it’s hard to argue with the fact he’s probably the most disrespectful and classless individual to ever occupy the White House.
Some of the more gullible folks posted the Young Conservatives story on their Facebook page and acted like they were outraged.
It’s pure silliness.
Some more reliable sources did report that Presidents don’t always attend a former First Lady’s funeral, but current and former First Ladies typically do. Even the right-wing Breitbart News reported that it appears that modern presidents don’t traditionally attend the funerals of former First Ladies.
So relax folks.
