Caught My Eye…

All aboard! Hahaha…

There are only 25 days until Election Day 2014!

If you are a first-time visitor, “Caught My Eye” is posted right here every Friday morning! This is when I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week. I often throw in a touch of sarcasm to make you smile – or to irritate you just a little – or maybe both.

Today I write about campaign mailers, Michele & Steve, distracted driving, midterm election turnout, my senate win/lose wish list, birthdays, plus we have winner who is making Montana proud!

Campaign Mailers:

Once the ballots were mailed to voters here in Montana just about everyone who follows politics knew there would be mailers sent attacking some candidates. Of course the targets of these mailers would say these mailers contain “grossly misleading or false” information.

It’s almost as common as the beautiful Montana sunset.

Lee Newspapers is reporting that attack mailers were sent to voters in Senate District 42 against candidate Joe Dooling and in Senate District 11 against Sen. Ed Buttrey, both Republicans. The mailers were sent by the Montana Democratic Party. You can read the whole story HERE.

Next week it will probably be some other group sending them.

Although most members of the Montana Legislature couldn’t pour water out of a boot with instructions on the heel, Buttrey is one of the more intelligent members. His support for veterans and the military is second to none.

Michele & Steve:

I thought Steve Daines was having a pretty easy race for U.S. Senate. I guess not.

I received a fundraising e-mail this week from the Daines campaign signed by Rep. Michele Bachmann who wrote, “It’s part of who we are: conservatives supporting one another when the going gets tough.”

Bachmann is not the sharpest knife in the drawer. My favorite Bachmann mistake was when she mixed up the boyhood homes of actor John Wayne with the serial killer John Wayne Gacy. You can read the “Top 10 Craziest Michele Bachmann Quotes of All Time” HERE.

After that, you’ll see why many people believe Bachmann is a few peas short of a casserole…

Distracted Driving:

I thought the ordinances passed by several cities in the past few years to ban talking/texting on cell phones while driving were a little silly. Eating a cheeseburger and hundreds of other things you can do while driving can be just as big a distraction.

Some ordinances, like the one passed in Great Falls (MT), promote the use of a “hands free device.” In a new study from AAA “Researchers questioned if the very latest hands-free, voice-only command systems caused drivers to get distracted. And the answer is, yes.”

You can read the story about the study HERE.

We’re Yawning Here:

According to Gallup polling, “Turnout in the midterm elections this fall could be lower than in the past two midterm elections, based on current voter engagement.”

Gallup also said that “Republicans appear poised to turn out in greater numbers than Democrats.”

It’s looking more and more like the Democrats will lose the majority in the senate. That may last only two years because in 2016 the Democrats are expected to have 10 seats up for election in the senate and Republicans will probably have 24.

Senate Win/Lose Wish List:

If I had a Senate win/lose wish list for 2014, here would be my selections. And, since I am an independent, I can pick from each party:

-Kentucky: I want Mitch McConnell to lose.
I would love to see Alison Lundergan Grimes beat McConnell. McConnell has harmed the GOP more than he has helped…

-Kansas: I want Pat Roberts to win.
Roberts is a patriot and we don’t have enough patriots serving in Congress. Kansans should reelect him.

-Alaska: I want Mark Begich to lose.
Begich would not have beaten Ted Stevens if not for prosecutorial misconduct in a court case that went against Stevens. The conviction was later set aside – after the election.

David Lee Roth turns 60, Brett Favre turns 45, Tanya Tucker is 56, Dale Earnhardt Jr. turns 40.

Making Montana Proud:

This section is where I mention people or groups whose actions embarrass Montana in some way.

-From the Billings Gazette: 40-year-old Michael Ray Hinshaw’s “unique face tattoos helped police quickly identify and arrest him when they responded to a disturbance at a Billings hotel on Sept. 28.”

I think “unique” was an understatement. Check out the booking photo HERE. Happy Halloween…

-From KRTV in Great Falls: Elijiah Norman Weller also has some “unique face tattoos.” He was charged with physically assaulting his girlfriend and then shooting at her as she tried to run away.

Check out his photo HERE.

Boo…Halloween is starting early!

One More Thing:

Go Royals…

  1. Roberts claim of residency in Kansas is limited to a Barcalounger in a furniture store. He has actually filed documents showing that his primary place of residence is in Virginia. Like McConnell, he’s another old dog that should be consigned to a nice, new bed of cedar shavings.

  2. You should see the mailer that the Democratic Party put out against Kris Hansen in Havre. There is a picture of Kris on it that on first look would lead one to think it is in support of her. Since many people don’t read these flyers I believe that the name recognition she gets from this attack will probably help her with many people.

  3. Distracted driving…Cheers for calling this out. My pet peeve is the person who drives with a dog on their lap! Putting on make-up is second but my all time favorite was the Florida women who was shaving down under on the way to a club in anticipation of a hot night in Miami. She wrecked her car in the process by hitting a stopped truck…priceless
