Caught My Eye…

You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.   – Winston Churchill

Welcome to the Big Show – “Caught My Eye!”

If you are a first-time visitor, “Caught My Eye” is posted here every Friday morning. This column is where I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week. Sometimes I throw in a touch of sarcasm to make you smile – or to irritate you just a little – maybe both.

Today I provide independent commentary about the Montana Legislature, Loretta Lynch & the Montana delegation, Adam Sanchez, Jr., & Cascade County, former Judge G. Todd Baugh, former General David Petraeus, and Barry Bonds. Plus, we have a winner who is Making Montana Proud!

Buckle up…

Montana Politics 2014: Judges

Be advised that today (July 23, 2014) is National Hot Dog Day – so throw down a couple dogs today in celebration!

In my mind judges and the term “hot dog” seem to go together. That is a good thing because judges are in the spotlight today at The Western Word. Today I write about Lawrence VanDyke who wants to be a judge and current judge G. Todd Baugh who, in my opinion, should not be a judge any longer.

Judge G. Todd Baugh: Hang Up Your Robe

Sometimes apologies aren’t enough. Montana District Court Judge G. Todd Baugh should step down from the bench or the Montana Supreme Court should remove him.

In case you don’t know about Judge Baugh, here are the details:

A few weeks ago, teacher Stacey Rambold, was sentenced by District Judge G. Todd Baugh “to 15 years in prison with all but 31 days suspended and one day credited for time served for three counts of sexual intercourse without consent starting in 2007.”

The sexual intercourse was with a 14-year-old girl, who later killed herself. During sentencing Baugh said the girl was “as much in control of the situation” and she was “older than her chronological age.”

His remarks were soon news around the world. Baugh embarrassed the judiciary. Baugh embarrassed Montana. Baugh embarrassed Billings.

He used six sentences in a letter of apology, which was written more to save his butt, than to really apologize.  Continue reading
