The Monday Memo

Thanks for making The Western Word part of your Monday routine. Here is the common-sense breakdown of the issues I’m tracking as we start the week:

  • Trump Shares Racist Video
  • Olympic Skier Hunter Hess
  • Texts & Phone Calls
  • Super Bowl LX
  • One More Thing

TRUMP SHARES RACIST VIDEO:

Thursday night, President Donald Trump shared a video via his Truth Social account that depicted former President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, as apes. Yes, apes. Several other prominent Democrats were depicted as various animals.

By the way, February is Black History Month.

At first, the White House defended the video. Then, there was some backlash about the video, and it was deleted.

Trump was asked if he would apologize and said, “No, I didn’t make a mistake.” He claims a staffer posted it. He said he did view the first part that was about voter fraud.  (Source)

Trump is making it OK to be a racist and to spread hate in our country. Shame on those who look the other way.

OLYMPIC SKIER HUNTER HESS:

U.S. Olympic skier Hunter Hess used his free speech rights during a press conference at the Olympics, and those comments angered President Trump.

The Associated Press (AP) reports:

Reporters on Friday asked U.S. athletes at a news conference how they feel representing the country during the Trump administration’s heighted immigration enforcement actions. Freestyle skier Hunter Hess replied that he had mixed emotions since he doesn’t agree with the situation, and that he is in Milan competing on behalf of everyone who helped get him to The Games.

“If it aligns with my moral values, I feel like I’m representing it,” Hess said. “Just because I’m wearing the flag doesn’t mean I represent everything that’s going on in the U.S.”

Trump posted on Truth Social:

U.S. Olympic Skier, Hunter Hess, a real Loser, says he doesn’t represent his Country in the current Winter Olympics. If that’s the case, he shouldn’t have tried out for the Team, and it’s too bad he’s on it. Very hard to root for someone like this. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

I support Hunter Hess. Trump is the real loser.

TEXTS & PHONE CALLS:

I have not donated to any political candidates or causes for probably 20 years or more. I do sign up for emails from candidates and political parties to be in the know.

I receive tons of emails, texts, and phone calls. The one I received the other day was quite pushy (maybe threatening?) about me finishing my “MAGA Voter Profile” that I never started.

Click HERE to see the screenshot. It starts with “Your silence will cost you.” The number it supposedly came from is 202-428-0230.

I will never vote for anyone who is a MAGA.

SUPER BOWL LX:

The Seattle Seahawks beat the New England Patriots 29-13. The Seahawks’ defense was suffocating. I like a good defensive game. (Box Score)

I enjoyed the game and the halftime show that featured Bad Bunny. Of course, like everything in this country these days, there was a divide in the country about the halftime show.  There were hateful posts made about Bad Bunny from the MAGA crowd. The MAGAs also put on their own halftime show called “The All-American Halftime Show,” as if the participants in the Super Bowl halftime show were not American. President Trump did not like the Super Bowl halftime show. You can read his comments HERE

Now we enter the long, dark offseason period. Sad times. The NFL draft will be held April 23-25, and the NFL kickoff game is September 10, 2026.

By the way, pitchers and catchers are reporting this week as the Major League Baseball spring training begins. (Source)

ONE MORE THING:

The people who need their own Super Bowl halftime show are the people who needed their own water fountains. (Source)

## HAVE A GREAT WEEK ##

  1. The MAGAs and the president knew the halftime show was going to be Bad Bunny and knew it was going to be in Spanish, knew there was an alternative in the Turning Point thing, but still stayed glued to the official show, apparently so they could whine afterwards like little snowflakes about Bad Bunny and a halftime show in Spanish.

Meanwhile, the show itself seemed very positive and inclusive from what I could tell, especially with the written scoreboard and football messages, and his “God Bless America” and all the other countries in the western hemisphere segment. Exactly the opposite of the MAGA goblins and their consuming hatred of anyone who is not under their very small tent.

  2. Seems to me that the MAGAts are actually pleased with the trumpsky bigotry; that he truly does represent their strongest attitudes about how our society should be. I haven’t seen more than 3 or 4 of the rest of the so-called “conservatives” in Congress who aren’t hiding under their desks.

The worst of the worst when it comes to gutless cowardice is Mike Johnson. And he calls himself a christian.

    • Great points. Sad times. Trump has brought back racism and bigotry. It’s like we’re back in the 50s and 60s. -JmB

      • If we were back in the 50’s at least we would have a good president, an honest one with a sense of decorum and human decency. A positive role model. Popular too.

        Back when America was great.
