The Monday Memo

Happy Monday, folks! Here are the topics for today’s column:

  • Shannon O’Brien
  • DeSantis Quits
  • Firearms In Post Offices
  • Football Roundup

SHANNON O’BRIEN:

After eight years of Republican Elsie Arntzen, it’s time for someone to take over as Superintendent of Public Schools in Montana who actually cares about students and teachers. That person may be Shannon O’Brien.

O’Brien has already received the endorsements of three former superintendents: Denise Juneau, Nancy Keenan, and Linda McCulloch. She is also endorsed by several state senators and state representatives.

Check out her website HERE.

DESANTIS QUITS:

The Associated Press (AP) reported that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis suspended his Republican presidential campaign on Sunday, ending his 2024 White House bid just before the New Hampshire primary while endorsing his bitter rival, Donald Trump.

I know several people are disappointed in DeSantis. A year or so ago, he was considered the next best thing for the GOP. Then he seemed to turn MAGA and could not be as MAGA as Trump, so he started losing support. Basically, the more people found out about DeSantis, the less support he had.

The only opponent left for Trump is Nikki Haley. As of January 21, Trump leads 49.8 to 36.1 for Haley in New Hampshire. (Source) If Haley loses Tuesday in New Hampshire by double digits, she is done.

FIREARMS IN POST OFFICES:

Reuters is reporting that a federal judge in Florida on Friday ruled that a U.S. law that bars people from possessing firearms in post offices is unconstitutional, citing a landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling from 2022 that expanded gun rights.

What’s next? Courts? Instead of seeing a defendant jump over the desk to attack a judge, maybe we’ll see a defendant pull a gun and shoot a judge. This ruling is a slippery slope.

FOOTBALL ROUNDUP:

There are three games left in the NFL season. The AFC/NFC Championships and then the Super Bowl.

On Saturday, the Ravens beat the Texans 34-10 and the 49ers beat the Packers 24-21.

On Sunday, the Lions beat the Buccaneers 31-23 and my Chiefs beat the Bills 27-24.

The next games are Sunday with my Chiefs at the Ravens and the Lions at the 49ers. The winners play in the Super Bowl.

There was a lot of talk about Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes never playing a road playoff game, but he and his team went to Buffalo and beat the Bills. Face it, Bills fans – your team is not that good. This is the sixth straight year the Chiefs will play in the AFC Championship game.
