Welcome to “Thursday Numbers!” If you are a first-time visitor, this is the weekly column where I look at the numbers in the news (in descending order) and provide commentary, sometimes sprinkled with sarcasm and humor.

That is how many people have died in the United States from coronavirus, according to the latest data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. There have been 96,249,182 cases across the country so far. The first death in the USA was reported on February 29, 2020. (Johns Hopkins)

Last week, the death total was 1,055,196.

In the week ending September 24, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims was 193,000, a decrease of 16,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised down by 4,000 from 213,000 to 209,000. The 4-week moving average was 207,000, a decrease of 8,750 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised down by 1,000 from 216,750 to 215,750. (DOL)

Last week the chance of Republicans winning the House was 72%.

I don’t think seven years is enough punishment. He should have received 10 years just for being from Iowa!

According to the Montana Department of Public Health & Human Services, Montana has ranked in the top five for suicide rates in the nation for the past 30 years. (MTN News)

This is a very serious problem. Our leaders need to devote more attention and resources to this issue.

The City-County Health Department in Great Falls has confirmed its first case of monkeypox. The agency said in a news release on Wednesday, September 28, 2022, that the patient is a man aged 20-29. (MTN News)
