In today’s column, I take a quick look at these people/issues:

  • Gianforte on COVID Upsurge
  • COVID Vaccines & U.S. Military
  • The Western Word Poll

GIANFORTE ON COVID UPSURGE:

In case you missed it, MTN News interviewed Montana Governor Greg Gianforte about the COVID upsurge, and his responses should embarrass all Montanans.

His milquetoast response to the pandemic where less than 50% of Montanans have been fully vaccinated is pathetic.

Gianforte took the bold step of saying “If you haven’t been vaccinated, I encourage you to go talk to your (medical) professional and consider it.”

Wow. Tough talk. Maybe he should say something like, “If you haven’t been vaccinated, your chances of dying are greater.”

Then he was asked about mandates. He responded with this gem:

“One of the things that we’ve learned over this last year is that mandates don’t work,” he said. “I campaigned on a platform of personal responsibility. … We’re going to focus on personal responsibility instead of mandates.”

Hey Guv – If personal responsibility worked, more than 49% of Montanans would be vaccinated. Try being a leader.

He was then asked why businesses should be prohibited from choosing to enforce requirements to protect their employees or customers, Gianforte replied:

“We’re not taking away anybody’s choice, because people can choose to wear a mask, they can choose to get vaccinated. We’re just not telling them how to live their lives.”

Gianforte seems to be fine in telling people how to live in other aspects of their lives, so the “We’re just not telling them how to live their lives” is bullshit.

Meanwhile, the cases continue to climb, and Montana is mentioned in the national news often for the increase of COVID cases.

Montana has a governor who lacks the balls to lead. It’s embarrassing.

COVID VACCINES & U.S. MILITARY:

The Associated Press (AP) reported that members of the U.S. military will be required to get the COVID-19 vaccine beginning next month under a plan laid out by the Pentagon Monday and endorsed by President Joe Biden. In memos distributed to all troops, top Pentagon leaders said the vaccine is a necessary step to maintain military readiness.

In my opinion, this is the proper move. I think they should expand the requirement to cover all Reserve and National Guard members.

Those who refuse can be released with a dishonorable discharge and lose all benefits. Freedom is not free.

Back in my day in the military, I was worldwide mobility qualified and had to take all the shots so that I could be deployed anywhere in the world. I survived.

THE WESTERN WORD POLL:

Last week U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL), Mike Lee (R-UT), James Lankford (R-OK), Steve Daines (R-MT), Roger Wicker (R-MS), and Josh Hawley (R-MO) introduced a resolution expressing that the Senate should not pass legislation mandating the registration of women for the Selective Service System.       • Agreed. But I think it’s important that they educate people as to what he’s become. I still run into Dems who think he’s doing a great job. They don’t understand the bigger picture. The only way I knew is that I’ve closely monitored these right wing groups for a long time since they first started coming to Montana. I’m afraid he could get elected again if he’s not shown for what he is. We will have upcoming environmental fights in Montana like the Bundy incident. Whose side will Jesse take? The blue tarp guy was killed fleeing to the next county over where he could get refuge from feds from that county’s constitutionalist sheriff. A guy named Palmer, a real pos. I till gotta find out why they ran slaughter outta Stillwater county. Is Jesse gonna provide refuge for law breakers just because he doesn’t believe in the laws? I believe he will.

  2. Well again Senator Daines decided being in the camp of Trump was better then voting for the trillion dollar Bipartisan Infrastructure bill. His vote against better roads and bridges in Montana is shameful. Even very conservative Republican Senators Cramer and Hoven of North Dakota and Risch and Crapo of Idaho voted for this. However I am sure Daines will try take credit for a new bridge or road someday in Montana.

  3. Good article, but I think they missed the bigger picture. Knudsen is just part, albeit a very important part, of the insidious infiltration of law enforcement by the extreme right wing. These are very nasty people. People need to start connecting the dots. Knudsen has bought into the whole America First garbage with all that implies. He is beyond the fringe. He takes his marching orders from the real fascists. As does Punchy G.

    Then further down this insidious chain is Sheriff Jesse Slaughter, who recently came out of the closet and declared himself to be a constitutionalist sheriff. That’s about as nutty as it gets. Unfortunately that gives him enormous power to do evil. He gets to hire as many kooks as he likes. And he is. Then, he makes all his employees take a study course of the right wing interpretation of the Constitution. Who the hell does he think he is? You can go on line and listen to Jesse expound his bizarre beliefs. But what the hell is he doing on northwest liberty radio? A Nazi site. He also pals around with his good buddy Richard Mack. Check him out.

    But even more insidious, Jesse also sends his deputies INTO our schools to teach the kids about the Constitution. That’s just sick. If you don’t understand the implications of that, read up.

    Time to pay attention to what’s really going on here. I would like the daily Montanan to connect the dots for us. I don’t have time. What’s really going on here?

    • Unfortunately as we learned from the last Sherriff, the Cascade County Commission simply throws up its hands and days we can’t do anything about another elected official. But they DO provide the Sherriff’s budget.

      Perhaps time to contact them and let them know that using taxpayer money for political indoctrination – of any sort – is out of line? The far right claims that health officers doing vaccine awareness programs in schools is overreach, so what would we call Slaughter’s constitution program? Maybe not the real inrent of the line item for the school.resource officer program.

      Larry have you read through/taken that University’s Constitution 101 course? I can’t seem to find many reviews/crticisms of it one way or the other.

      • Terry, two points. I don’t know how many colleges there are in the country, but I assuming a lot. How is it that then that lil constitution rootin tootin Jesse slaughter landed on Hillsdale as the best to infect the minds of his troops and the young minds of our children with their blatantly white supremacist interpretation of the constitution? And why did sheriff Richard Mack, the founder of racist sheriffs organization react with such glee when he heard that Jesse was using Hillsdale? On a Nazi radio station no less? I think we know. Jesse was not converted over night. He planned this coup for a long time. Makes ya wonder how many other cops with the GFPD have fascist leanings. Jesse probably spent years recruiting others.
