Quote for the day…
Being honest may not get you a lot of friends but it’ll always get you the right ones. ― John Lennon
Today’s independent commentary deals with these issues:
- The Western Word Poll
- BDC Editorial
- Sexual Harassment
- One More Thing
THE WESTERN WORD POLL:
Last week U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL), Mike Lee (R-UT), James Lankford (R-OK), Steve Daines (R-MT), Roger Wicker (R-MS), and Josh Hawley (R-MO) introduced a resolution expressing that the Senate should not pass legislation mandating the registration of women for the Selective Service System. (Source)
This week’s poll asks, “Should women be required to register for the draft?”
Results will be posted later this week.
BDC EDITORIAL:
The Bozeman Daily Chronicle (BDC) editorial board published an editorial on Sunday called, “Montana’s senseless prohibition on nursing homes requiring vaccinations.”
They center their argument on House Bill 702 (Montana Legislature) which forbids nursing homes from requiring their employees or residents to be vaccinated. The law also bans other businesses from requiring employees to be vaccinated or masks on unvaccinated customers who enter their premises, unless everyone is required to wear masks.
The editorial board also contends that Montana is the only state in the nation to prohibit private businesses from requiring employees to get vaccinated. And this in the middle of resurgence of the delta variant of the virus that threatens to take us back into the dark days we lived through last year and early this year.
They close the editorial with some words of wisdom:
Someday we are going to awaken from this self-inflicted nightmare. But thanks to HB 702 and its proponents, that day may have been pushed back.
As with many states run by Republicans, Montana has made the COVID 19 pandemic political. Elected officials were upset that health care officials were getting the spotlight, so they passed legislation to give them more power – power over something that 99% of them know nothing about.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT:
With New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) facing sexual harassment charges it was interesting how quickly his fellow Democrats called for his resignation. Those Democrats included President Joe Biden.
The same thing happened to U.S. Senator Al Franken.
A few months ago, as the Cuomo allegations were gaining traction, Stephanie Stark, a freelance writer based in New York and who previously worked for Cuomo, wrote a column for The Atlantic.
Here is what she did:
In 2017, in response to the Access Hollywood tape and the shock of Donald Trump’s election, I embarked on a research project. I wanted to understand how so many people could support a leader who had bragged about being a sexual predator. And I wanted to know why I experienced such visceral disgust for Trump’s character but so many others in the United States did not.
I have often wondered the same.
Here are some of her findings:
What I found helps explain how Trump weathered 19 accusations of sexual harassment or assault with the support of his party, while Cuomo faces growing calls for his resignation. Democrats, I learned, are more likely than Republicans to believe claims of sexual harassment and assault—and more likely to conclude that a politician who commits such acts will also abuse the powers of his office in other ways.

ONE MORE THING:

“Should women be required to register for the draft?”
Only if they’re serious about equal rights. But equal pay for equal work, equal opportunity for every aspect of careers, and absolute accountability for discrimination against women have to be realized BEFORE things like this go forward.
Fred – good points. Thanks, JmB
When Clinton was in office, we had supply and demand but it didn’t cost as much as it did when when Trump was in office! Why? Same thing when Obama was in office – not as much as Trump! Why?
ROTFL! What a genius.
Terry – glad you enjoyed it! Thanks, JmB
Trump has unleashed the most stupid, thuggish, criminal, violent dregs of society loose upon us. He calls them good people. And now, even though they are dumber than dog shit, they feel emboldened to hold forth on any topic even those they know nothing about. It’s the old south writ large. Unfortunately I’m old now. My race is nearly run. But if I were still in my prime I’d be preparing to do battle with these no good racist Nazis.
