The Monday Memo

Quote for the day…

You think you can hurt my feelings? I used to hold the flashlight for my dad. -Unknown

Today’s independent commentary deals with these issues:

  • The Western Word Poll
  • Politics & Religion
  • Reading Assignments

THE WESTERN WORD POLL:

Last week, Cascade County (Great Falls), Montana, Sheriff Jesse Slaughter announced that he was switching political parties from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party.

Watch Slaughter’s four-minute Facebook announcement HERE, during which he lists his reasons for the switch.
The Great Falls Tribune covered the story HERE.
The Cascade County Republican Central Committee responded HERE.
The Cascade County Democratic Central Committee responded HERE.

This week’s poll question asks, “Do you agree with Sheriff Slaughter’s decision to switch political parties?”

The results will be posted Thursday.

POLITICS & RELIGION:

In case you missed it, the Associated Press (AP) reported that U.S. Catholic bishops overwhelmingly approved the drafting of a “teaching document” that many of them hope will rebuke Catholic politicians, including President Joe Biden, for receiving Communion despite their support for abortion rights.

There will be nothing better than debating politics and religion at the family gatherings this summer, huh?

In my bio at the top of the page (About Jackie M. ‘Mike’ Brown) I write a little about religion saying that I attend church regularly and I say this:

Religion: I don’t like to debate religion because I feel religion is a personal decision. When I die, I am going to heaven. Are you? Everyone should have a relationship with Jesus Christ, period. (John 3:16)

I am not a Catholic. I am a Protestant. There are problems with both.

A person named Travis Akers (@travisakers) posted the following on Twitter. I think it pretty much sums up my thoughts about what the U.S. Catholic bishops are trying to do.

Amen to that.

  5. From what I’ve seen about law enforcement in Cascade Cnty, I’d say Slaughter’s party-switch draws a “Good riddance!”

  6. Had to vote yes on Slaughter switching parties. He was never really a Democrat anyhow. The reasons he gave were publicity stunt BS but the switch to Repub is finally honest to voters of all parties.

I did get a chuckle out of Cyndi Baker welcoming him to the “big tent” party. If it is so “big tent” why does the pejorative term RINO exist, much less get thrown about so often by Repubs against their own, particularly by Trump? How about “never Trumper”?

    • Terry – That’s a good point. I had misgivings about the GOP after the 2006 elections and when they locked on to Trump I said no more. Thanks, JmB
