In today’s column, I take a quick look at these people/issues:

CAMPUS CONCEALED CARRY:

With Governor Greg Gianforte signing House Bill 102 into law back in February, I believe if the Montana Board of Regents does not try to stop its implementation through the courts, it will end up being a bloody train wreck.

Lee Newspapers reports that the bill allows Montanans to carry concealed firearms in most places in the state without a permit, and — most relevant to the Montana University System — removes the Board of Regents’ ability to enforce restrictions for guns carried on campuses.

Amanda Curtis, president of the Montana Federation of Public Employees, is on point with her concerns about the bill. Her group is urging the regents to go the litigation route before they make changes.

The Montana Board of Regents should listen to Curtis.

One can only imagine what will happen if this plan is implemented on college campuses. Next up high schools? Middle schools?

ANOTHER LAWSUIT:

The Montana courts are going to get a workout since there were so many bad bills passed by the Republican-controlled Legislature.

The Associated Press (AP) is reporting a lawsuit has been filed to challenge a legislative proposal to change the way Supreme Court justices would be elected in Montana.

A Roman Catholic nun, a former court clerk and three former state lawmakers walk into a bar…

Just kidding. The correct wording is:

A Roman Catholic nun, a former court clerk and three former state lawmakers are among those challenging the constitutionality of a bill the legislature passed to ask Montana voters if they want to elect Supreme Court justices by district, rather than on a statewide basis.

This case will be interesting to watch. My guess is the legislative proposal will probably be declared unconstitutional. That’s one of many bills/laws that will probably be declared unconstitutional by the Montana courts.

BIDEN POLLING:

The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research released the results of their latest survey which shows President Joe Biden doing well.

The AP reports that in the fourth month of his presidency, Biden’s overall approval rating sits at 63%. When it comes to the new Democratic president’s handling of the pandemic, 71% of Americans approve, including 47% of Republicans.

The AP-NORC poll also shows an uptick in Americans’ overall optimism about the state of the country. Fifty-four percent say the country is on the right track, higher than at any point in AP-NORC polls conducted since 2017; 44% think the nation is on the wrong track.

It’s nice to have a President who does not start his day tweeting insults from the crapper.

THE WESTERN WORD POLL::

U.S. Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) is the House Republican Conference chair which is the third-highest position in the House Republican leadership. There are indications that she will be removed this week from that leadership position by the Republicans in the U.S. House due to her statements about and vote to impeach former President Donald Trump.

This week’s poll asks, “Should Liz Cheney be removed from her leadership position in the House Republican Conference?”
