Welcome to “Caught My Eye” (CME)! CME is coming to you, STILL coronavirus free, from deep inside an underground bunker in Montana. The bunker also serves as the worldwide headquarters for The Western Word blog!

CME is the once a week column that is posted here every Friday morning. This is when I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week. There may be some sarcasm and pointed independent commentary so be warned!

MONTANA AIR NATIONAL GUARD:

A report from the Great Falls Tribune says that the chief of the National Guard Bureau, Gen. Joseph L. Lengyel, said Wednesday that diverting defense funds to be used to build a wall along the Mexican border could delay upgrades to the C-130 program for the Montana Air National Guard.

Those remarks could be a career-ender for Lengyel if they get back to President Donald J. Trump.

I’m sure that Republican U.S. Senator Steve Daines and Republican U.S. Representative Greg Gianforte will ride in and save the day. If they don’t, it will be fair game to use against them in the upcoming election.

I’ve never been happy with the Montana Air National Guard getting stuck with the C-130s. It was kind of like a consolation prize after losing the jets and happened because the congressional delegation did not have the clout to stop it.

MONDAY, MONDAY, MONDAY:

This coming Monday, (March 9, 2020) at 5:00 p.m. is the deadline to file for elective office in Montana. People will be watching closely to see if Montana Governor Steve Bullock (D) files to run for U.S. Senate.

This is always an exciting time!

Some reporters (I won’t name them) reported that all the candidates for governor have filed which unless they have a crystal ball, they don’t know. The last day of filing always has some surprises.

In doing a quick check of state House and Senate filings, there are no “Independent” candidates at this time (Friday morning). There are about five Libertarians running, so far. (MT SOS)

The Republicans and Democrats know if they made it easier for Independents to run for office in Montana, they would lose their clout. I am a big proponent of allowing Independents to file for office the same easy way as Republicans and Democrats.

CHUCK SCHUMER:

U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) made a mistake this week when giving a speech at a pro-choice rally in front of the U.S. Supreme Court building in Washington, D.C. Here is what he said:

I want to tell you Gorsuch. I want to tell you Kavanaugh. You have released the whirlwind and you will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.

Schumer later apologized, which is a good thing. (CNN)

There are talks of censuring Schumer in the Senate. I don’t really care. At least those who are proposing “censure” are not posting stupid stuff on Facebook saying he should be impeached (he can’t be impeached).

Our elected officials from city commissioners up to the President of the United States should watch what they say.

There are crazies on both sides who take what elected officials say literally.
