Thursday Numbers

I don’t think the therapist is supposed to say “wow,” that many times in your first session but here we are. –Unknown

Welcome to “Thursday Numbers!” In case you’re a first-time visitor, this is the weekly column where I take a look at the numbers that are in the news (in descending order) and provide commentary sometimes sprinkled with sarcasm, humor, and bluntness.

This week’s topics include the Facebook fine, the CNN Democratic debates, unemployment, Bernie Madoff, Greg Gianforte, Steve Daines, Jon Tester, zombie eaters, Trump’s job performance, MLB standings, immigration raid, Robert Mueller, and much more!

5,000,000,000

That’s how much ($5 billion) the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) fined Facebook over privacy violations and its failure to inform tens of millions of users about a data leak that happened years ago. The fine is the largest the US regulator has levied against a tech company. (CNET)

I hope the FTC has the correct address to send my check…

300,000

CNN is requiring a commitment of $300,000 in advertising on the network before a potential sponsor can purchase commercials within the two Democratic debate telecasts. The minimum requirement is pegged at around $300,000, according to a person familiar with the matter. (Variety)

This is their big chance to make some money…

206,000

That’s how many people filed new claims for unemployment last week. (USDOL)

150

Bernie Madoff, who oversaw the largest Ponzi scheme in U.S. history, has filed a request with the Justice Department for President Trump to reduce his prison sentence. Madoff, 81, is serving 150 years in a federal prison in Butner, N.C., for orchestrating the financial fraud, which conned investors in his firm Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities out of almost $65 billion. (The Hill)

Maybe Trump can cut 10 years…

97.5

MTN News reported that in Montana’s three-person congressional delegation, the prize for standing most often with President Trump goes to Republican U.S. Rep. Greg Gianforte, who has supported Trump on key votes 97.5 percent this year and 93.5 percent the previous two years.

U.S. Senator Steve Daines, a Republican who’s up for re-election next year, voted with the president 88 percent of the time on key votes in 2017 and 2018 and has an 85 percent rating for his career. Daines has supported Trump on 71 percent of 16 key Senate votes this year.

Daines better watch out with that 71% support of Trump, because the far-right wackos in Montana will start calling him a RINO (Republican In Name Only)…

As for U.S. Senator Jon Tester, a Democrat, MTN reported that he voted with the president 38 percent of the time on key Senate votes in 2017 and 2018, but, so far this year, opposed Trump on all 16 key votes through the end of June.

MTN obtained the information from the website FiveThirtyEight.com.

88

The average American is spending more time staring at a screen than ever before. Now, a new survey of 2,000 adults has found that a whopping 88% are so-called “zombie eaters” who stare at some type of screen while eating. (StudyFinds.org)

Full Disclosure: I ate a snack while writing this column…

46

A new Fox News poll shows that President Donald Trump’s job performance sits at 46% approve and 51% disapprove. On the economy, 52% approve of the job Trump is doing.

Trump needs to kiss more babies…

30-67

That’s the record of the Major League Baseball’s Detroit Tigers, which is the worst in MLB. The New York Yankees at 66-35 have the best record. (ESPN)

My Kansas City Royals are 39-64 – just 28 games out of first place!

18

That’s how many targeted migrants with final deportation orders were arrested over the weekend during the recent immigration raid publicized by President Trump. Officials arrested another 17 undocumented immigrants they encountered in their searches. (Texas Tribune)

For better results, maybe Trump should keep his mouth shut…

7

Former special counsel Robert Mueller testified for nearly 7 hours on Wednesday. (USA Today)

Everyone could find something to declare victory about after the testimony ended – it’s like everyone received a prize for showing up! What most people want to know is where can we go to get these seven wasted hours back…

  1. Limbaugh is on a rant about Mueller being a “doddering old fool” Seems like he hoped for an indictment on Russian collusion. So sad Mueller didn’t provide it.

    • Well Limbaugh is 68 so age does catch up somewhat with us all some faster then others,he may have some problems of his own soon which I wish on no one. Mueller has served his county for decades. He is a Vietnam War Hero for one. Mueller could of stayed in private law and made big $$ but he felt serving his country was more important . Limbaugh is worth 100 times as much as Mueller and avoided the draft as did Gingrich,Cheney,Ken Starr, and Trump while Mueller joined the Marines being wounded serving in Vietnam. I also served in Vietnam and now suffering many ills from Agent Orange. So Limbaugh needs to back off on the attacks on Mueller who is a patriot.
