Thursday Numbers

Imagine what seven billion humans could accomplish if we all loved and respected each other. – A.D. Williams

Welcome to “Thursday Numbers!” In case you’re a first-time visitor, this is the weekly column where I take a look at the numbers that are in the news (in descending order) and provide commentary sometimes sprinkled with sarcasm, humor, and bluntness.

This week’s topics include the Mega Millions jackpot, Bullock fundraising, unemployment, Sun River Wildlife Management Area, Trump radio, the Alabama abortion law, Electoral College, a Fox News Poll, best/worst in MLB, NBA playoffs, Stanley Cup playoffs, and much more!

That’s the next jackpot ($339 million) for the Mega Millions lottery drawing which is Friday night. (

Montana Governor Steve Bullock (D) raised $1 million from donors in all 50 states in the 24 hours after he launched his 2020 presidential bid, his campaign announced Wednesday. (CNN)

CNN also reported that first-day fundraising hauls are often touted by campaigns as a sign of strength out of the gate. Former Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign announced that it raised $6.3 million in the first day, putting him at the top of the field ahead of Sen. Bernie Sanders, who raised $5.9 million in the first day, and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke, who raised $6.1 million. Sen. Kamala Harris raised $1.5 million in the first 24 hours.

That’s how many people filed new claims for unemployment last week. (USDOL)

The Sun River Wildlife Management Area opened to the public Wednesday (May 15) and according to FWP, officials counted just under 300 vehicles and estimate 750 people showed up to look for elk antlers. (KRTV)

I did the “hunt” several years ago. I hiked around the area for 8-10 hours mostly in the dark with a flashlight because back then they opened it up at midnight. As the sun came up, one could see that the Sun River Wildlife Management Area is truly God’s country. Beautiful place!

A Connecticut radio station (WDRC) has rebranded itself as ‘Trump 103.3’ in ‘ultra-conservative’ talk format. (

I thought the Fox News channel and Fox News radio were already Trump TV and Trump radio…

Alabama’s Republican governor signed the most stringent abortion legislation in the nation Wednesday, making performing an abortion a felony in nearly all cases. The Alabama law, which goes into effect in six months, would make performing an abortion at any stage of pregnancy a felony punishable by 10 to 99 years or life in prison for the provider. The only exception would be when the woman’s health is at serious risk. (AP)

The law will be blocked by the courts, but the final say may rest with the U.S. Supreme Court. It will be interesting.

Gallup reported that by 55% to 43%, U.S. adults support amending the Constitution so that the winner of the popular vote would win the election rather than keeping the current Electoral College system. However, more say they are against (53%) rather than for (45%) a proposal that would keep the Electoral College system, but allow states to award their electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote rather than the winner of their state’s popular vote. (Gallup)

I am against changing the current system.

Forty-seven percent say the economy is in excellent or good condition, according to the latest Fox News Poll. In the last 18 years, that number has only been higher twice (both times were under the Trump administration in 2018). In addition, 16 percent say the economy is in excellent shape — one point off the record of 17 percent in January 2018. (Fox News)

The poll also showed President Trump’s job approval rating was still below 50%, with 46% approval to 53% disapproval.

As of late Wednesday night, that’s the best record in Major League Baseball (MLB) and it belongs to the Houston Astros. The Miami Marlins are 10-31 and that is the worst record in MLB. (ESPN)

My Kansas City Royals are 15-28 and already 13.5 games out of first place.

There are four teams left in the NBA playoffs: Milwaukee and Toronto are playing for the Eastern Conference crown. Golden State and Portland are playing for the Western Conference crown. The games are televised on ESPN and TNT.

The winners will meet in the 2019 NBA Finals. The Finals are scheduled to begin on May 30.

The 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs (National Hockey League) also have four teams remaining: Boston Bruins and the Carolina Hurricanes are playing for the East title. The San Jose Sharks are playing the St. Louis Blues for the West title. Most of the games are televised on NBCSN.

  1. Even that ignorant, hate-mongering fraud Pat Robertson says the Alabama law is extreme.

    • Doug – I heard that and it surprised me. I am not sure what his motive is. Thanks. -JmB
