Caught My Eye…

Never let your loyalty make a fool of you. – Unknown

Welcome to the big column to end the week, “Caught My Eye” (CME)!

If you are a first-time visitor, welcome! CME is the once a week column that is posted here every Friday morning. This is when I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week. There may be some sarcasm and pointed independent commentary so be warned!

Here are the topics that “Caught My Eye” this week:

  • The Abortion Issue
  • Cascade County Sheriff
  • Districting & Apportionment Commission
  • Campaign Stickers
  • One More Thing

The Abortion Issue:

With Alabama having a new law that makes abortion illegal except to protect the life of the mother, and other states trying to pass more restrictive abortion laws, this looks like it will be a major issue in the 2020 elections.

It looks like the Democrats should have the inside track on this issue. Gallup has polled on the abortion issue for years and asked, “Do you think abortions should be legal under any circumstances, legal only under certain circumstances or illegal in all circumstances?”

In May 2018, 50% said abortion should be legal only under certain circumstances, 29% said abortion should be legal under any circumstance, and 18% said abortion should be illegal in all circumstances.

So about 79% support some sort of abortion.

Personally, I hope we have fewer abortions in the world. That does not mean that I am a pro-life advocate. I believe that abortion is a deeply personal manner that should be between a woman and her healthcare provider.

This issue will probably end up in the U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS). Although pro-life folks believe they have a good chance with a more conservative court on the issue of banning abortions, I don’t think SCOTUS will overturn Roe v. Wade.

Cascade County Sheriff:

The Great Falls Tribune reported this week that the Cascade County Sheriff’s Office is preparing to purchase a drug detection dog.

I think this is a good thing.

One of the reasons I think it is a good thing is that there have been several reports of theft going on at the Cascade County Sheriff’s office, especially people taking issued items (like firearms) with them when they retire. If the drug dog retires he/she would probably only want his/her water and food dish and maybe a chew toy and not county-owned firearms…

Districting & Apportionment Commission:

The Great Falls Tribune reported that the four members (two Republicans and two Democrats) of the Districting and Apportionment Commission could not decide on a fifth member. This means the Montana Supreme Court will make the decision for them.

I’m not surprised.

I’m guessing the fifth member will probably lean to the left.

Campaign Stickers:

Election Day 2020 is quickly approaching and I’ve already received my first free campaign sticker:

If you would like to see your campaign bumper sticker featured here at The Western Word, email me at Western_Word@Yahoo.com to find out where to send it.

When a candidate’s bumper sticker is displayed here at The Western Word, it does not mean I am endorsing the candidate.

One More Thing:

This Saturday (May 18) is Armed Forces Day. This is the day we honor those who are currently serving in the military.

  1. No matter what you think about abortion — as long as people can buy meth and opiates on every U.S. street corner — young people will be able to buy abortions pills. But the Religious Right pretends they can control this issue. Surely, God endorses the idea — “What fools these mortals be.”

    • Carole – True. That’s what should worry everyone. Thanks, JmB
