Daines & Afghanistan:

U.S. Senator Steve Daines (R-MT) is back from his secret trip to Afghanistan.

The Great Falls Tribune has a story about the trip in which Daines says that U.S. withdrawal now would have devastating consequences and put Americans at risk. We’ve been there for 17 years.

The Tribune story was placed on the front page of the print edition.

Daines is one of the last people I would listen to when it comes to military or defense issues. He has no experience in these matters. To be fair, the other members of the Montana congressional delegation are weak on defense and military matters as well.

The good news for Daines is that on his secret trip he was able to get some new photos and video for his upcoming reelection campaign. #Winning

Trump Campaign Travels:

Just about every election cycle there are complaints about the cost of Presidential visits during which the President campaigns for candidates. It’s a common occurrence.

It’s been reported (recently by MTN News) that President Donald Trump’s four visits to Montana cost the taxpayers $3 million and that doesn’t include other costs like the Secret Service and support personnel.

Trump was coming to Montana to help defeat U.S. Senator Jon Tester (D-MT), and Trump failed miserably. Tester will start his third term in the U.S. Senate this January.

I remember when Republicans in Montana were pissed that Governor Steve Bullock, a Democrat, might have used the state airplane for campaign purposes. That cost was a drop in a bucket compared to what it cost for the President.

I’m sure we’ll be hearing from the Montana Republicans really soon about the President’s campaign trips Montana…

We may not like it, but until there are changes we’ll continue to see Presidents (from both parties) use Air Force One and power of that office to help elect their people – with the help of taxpayer money.

Biden in Montana:

Former Vice President Joe Biden was in Montana recently and told a crowd in Missoula that he believes that he is the most qualified person in the country to be president. The Associated Press has the story HERE.

Here at The Western Word, I rate those comments from Biden as “True.”

Sadly though, the best-qualified person does not always get elected to office (See Trump).

I like Biden. I did not always like him when he was a U.S. Senator, but he has grown on me since he was Vice President.

Biden is 76 years old and that could be a problem for him if he decides to run. It would be fun watching Biden and Trump (age 72) debate, though…

Is 70 the new 50?

Green Bay Packers:

The Green Bay Packers fired head coach Mike McCarthy this week. The Packers have a record this season of 4-7-1. McCarthy has an overall record of 125-77-2 as the Packers head coach while winning one Super Bowl.

McCarthy probably won’t be out of work very long.

Whoever the Packers hire will have to deal with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers recently signed a four-year contract for $134 million, which does not leave the Packers much money to get talent signed at other positions.

I do hope that whoever the Packers hire as head coach will let Rodgers know how much his State Farm Insurance commercials suck…
