Thursday Numbers

I enjoy a glass of wine each night for its health benefits. The other glasses are for my witty comebacks and flawless dance moves. – Unknown

Welcome to “Thursday Numbers!” In case you’re a first-time visitor, this is the weekly column where I take a look at the numbers that are in the news (in descending order) and provide commentary sometimes sprinkled with sarcasm.

This week’s topics include the Mega Millions lottery jackpot, unemployment, Forbes 400, MLB losers and winners, U.S. Senate and House debate poll results, confidence in politicians, Brett Kavanaugh, Melania Trump’s travels, Rams, Chiefs, and the Cardinals.

405,000,000

That’s the jackpot for the next Mega Millions lottery drawing Friday night. (MegaMillions)

It’s OK to dream…

207,000

That’s how many people filed new claims for unemployment last week. (USDOL)

400

The 2018 version of the Forbes 400 list was released yesterday and for the first time since 1994, there is a new No. 1, as Amazon.com founder and CEO Jeff Bezos breaks Bill Gates’ 24-year run at the top. (Forbes)

To make the list this year, you need to have $2.1 billion in net worth. I was just a little short…

115

That’s how many games the Baltimore Orioles lost during the 2018 Major League Baseball season. They finished with a record of 47-115. The Kansas City Royals finished with a record of 58-104, and the Chicago White Sox round out the teams with 100 or more losses. The White Sox finished with a record of 62-100. (ESPN)

For some reason, the Royals are keeping their manager for next season.

108

That’s how many games the Boston Red Sox won during the 2018 Major League Baseball season. They finished with the best record in baseball (108 -54). The Houston Astros finished with a record of 103-59. The New York Yankees round out the 100 game winning teams with a record of 100-62. (ESPN)

I think one of those three teams will win the World Series…

Last Saturday night, two candidates, Jon Tester (D) and Matt Rosendale (R), participated in a debate for the U.S. Senate.

Earlier this week, The Western Word poll asked, “Who do you think won the U.S. Senate debate?” Here are the results:

  • Jon Tester: 91%
  • Matt Rosendale: 8%
  • Undecided: 1%

One thing for sure this election season in Montana, the Democrats are owning social media.

Thanks to all who participated!

Last Saturday night, three candidates (Greg Gianforte (R), Elinor Swanson (L), and Kathleen Williams (D)), running for Montana’s lone U.S. House seat debated.

Earlier this week, The Western Word poll asked, “Who do you think won the Montana U.S. House debate?” Here are the results:

  • Kathleen Williams: 84%
  • Greg Gianforte: 10%
  • Undecided: 6%
  • Elinor Swanson: 0%

One thing for sure this election season in Montana, the Democrats are owning social media.

Thanks to all who participated!

Fifty-five percent of Americans said in early September that they have a “great deal” or “fair amount” of confidence in politicians — a 10-year high that is up seven percentage points from a year ago and 13 points from the record low of 42% in September 2016. (Gallup)

Wow…

40

More than 40 people with potential information into the sexual misconduct allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh have not been contacted by the FBI, according to multiple sources that include friends of both the nominee and his accusers. (NBC News)

The pro and anti-Kavanaugh people are out in full force.

First lady Melania Trump headed for Africa on Monday on her first big solo international trip, aiming to make child well-being the focus of a five-day, four-country tour that will take her to every corner of the vast and impoverished continent. The first lady will visit Ghana in the West, followed by stops in Malawi in the South, Kenya in the East and Egypt in the Northeast. (AP)

BBC News had this to say about Melania Trump’s trip:

President Donald Trump has not visited Africa since taking office in January 2017.

In February, a row broke out after he allegedly used “shithole” to describe some African nations.

Mrs. Trump’s week-long trip to the continent is seen as helping to heal some of the divisions.

There are only two undefeated teams left in the National Football League (NFL), the Los Angeles Rams, and the Kansas City Chiefs. (NFL.com)

I am a long-time Chiefs fan – so in the back of my mind, I figure they will crash and burn at some point…

There’s only one team left in the National Football League (NFL) that has not won a game. That team is the Arizona Cardinals. (NFL.com)

One is the loneliest number…

  1. 2. tRump and McConnell have shown they know how to rig an investigation. The Kavanaugh investigation was both a sham and a farce.

    1. Big report on the widespread and long-runnning state and Federal tax fraud committed by the tRump family. The statute of limitations won’t save them from the civil penalties.

    • Doug – Thanks. You will maybe enjoy Caught My Eye on Friday. The Dems wanted an investigation. They got it. 😉
As for Trump’s tax issue. That was one of several reasons I dislike him. Too secretive. Thanks as always for your insights. -JmB

  2. 55: It appears there are a lot of Democrats who like their Democratic representatives and a bunch of Republicans that are happy with theirs…

Dave, it sounds like you and I were the only ones to take the poll and to go right!

Not making the list is 230,000 for the number of new jobs in the private sector in September. When was the last time the new jobs number trumped the new claims for unemployment number?

    Don’t forget to stretch!

    • Barry – Good observation. But when you put all those Republicans and Democrats representatives together and give them power, they screw up. Thanks for the idea about the jobs number. As always, if you see some numbers prior to Thursday that you think I might include, email me and I’ll check them out. This blog, as well as the Facebook page, welcome all political opinions. Thanks for reading and I will stretch! -JmB

  3. It is pretty lonely being a Republican reader of your column. The poll results are really crazy. I did notice that when I voted, my ballot had already been voted Democrat. I had to change it to vote Republican. You must have some Butte guys who got ahold of your list of readers!

    • Thanks Dave. You should see some of the personal emails I get from Republicans who think I am a traitor for not toeing the GOP line! Yes, this poll was hit hard by the Dems, but oftentimes it’s a contest to see who can get their people to vote. This time Democrats won. Thanks for reading! -JmB
