The Wednesday Read: Taxes, Trump, & Lauer

Tax cuts are like sex: When they are good, they are very, very good. And when they are bad, they are still pretty good. – M. Stanton Evans

Today’s commentary deals with:

  • MTN News & Taxes
  • Trump Tweets
  • Matt Lauer

MTN News & Taxes:

In case you missed it, MTN News (Mike Dennison) reported on the Republican tax-cut bill before the U.S. Senate. Great report.

MTN reports that it would lower federal income taxes for the vast majority of Montanans, but almost half its aggregate cut — $386 million next year – flows to the top three percent of income-earners. This is according to a state Revenue Department analysis.

It looks like the big winners will be the rich.

Almost half of the total cut — $387 million – would go to the top three percent of income-earners in Montana, or the approximately 15,000 households that earn more than $196,000 a year. This group’s average tax cut would be nearly $26,000.

The analysis showed for the middle tier of income-earners – the 200,000 households earning between $20,000 and $64,000 a year in Montana – the average tax cut would be $710. The analysis estimated that 80 percent of this group would see tax cuts of more than $50 per household.

As for the bottom third of income-earners – the analysis showed those earning less than $20,000 a year – about 70 percent would see little or no change in their federal taxes. However, the overall group would still see an average reduction of $290 per household next year.

There’s a lot of interesting stuff in the story, so I suggest you read it HERE.

As with most issues coming out of Washington, D.C., both sides will find a way to spin it to make it look good or bad.

Trump Tweets:

It’s pretty amazing all the things that President Donald Trump tweets, but this morning he re-tweeted some anti-Muslim social media posts by a far-right British political figure. (Roll Call)

Those tweets have a lot of people upset, and they should.

The first tweet was titled “Muslim migrant beats up Dutch boy on crutches!” The second retweet by the President was titled, “Muslim Destroys a Statue of Virgin Mary!” The third was “Islamist mob pushes teenage boy off roof and beats him to death!”

I’m all for the President tweeting, but these tweets went way too far. It’s undignified for the President of the United States of America to be tweeting anti-Muslim videos.

Matt Lauer:

I have not watched the Today show on NBC very much in the last 20 or so years. That’s because the news on the Today show at 7:00 a.m. here is old news. I live in the Mountain Time Zone.

I watched the beginning of the show this morning. Matt Lauer was terminated from the show overnight. The news should help the ratings this morning.

Here’s the tweet announcing Lauer’s termination:

Matt Lauer has been terminated from NBC News. On Monday night, we received a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace by Matt Lauer. As a result, we’ve decided to terminate his employment.

You can click HERE to hear co-anchors Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb talk about it.

Several years ago, NBC fired Ann Curry from the Today show and replaced her with Savannah Guthrie. I think that hurt the ratings some and it hurt Matt Lauer.

Ann Curry is a very good reporter and she was a favorite of many. There are a lot of tweets about this being “karma” for Curry.

With all the allegations coming forward concerning sexual harassment, many people are wondering who will be next.
