Thursday Numbers

I have noticed that nothing I never said ever did me any harm. – Calvin Coolidge

Welcome to “Thursday Numbers!” In case you’re a first-time visitor, this is the weekly column where I take a look at the numbers that are in the news (in descending order) and provide commentary sometimes sprinkled with sarcasm.

This week’s topics include the border wall, unemployment, Ryan Zinke’s private flights, gun violence, The Montana Post, National Hockey League, abortion, weather forecasting, Fox & Friends, Kansas City Chiefs, and much more!

The U.S. House Homeland Security Committee approved Wednesday a border security bill that includes $10 billion for a border wall.(

That’s how many people filed new claims for unemployment last week. (USDOL)

That was the cost of one of Ryan Zinke’s private flights from Las Vegas to near his home in Whitefish, Montana. Zinke is the Secretary of the Department of Interior. (CNN)

Yesterday, Zinke made headlines again about the travel issue with the Associated Press reporting, “Interior chief dismisses criticism of travel with vulgarity.”

Zinke’s response is an embarrassment. I think his days are numbered in the Trump administration.

Since the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, the U.S. has seen 1,518 acts of gun violence in which at least four people were wounded or killed, according to the Gun Violence Archive website. That’s nearly one mass shooting a day for the 1,754 days since the shocking slaughter of the Connecticut kids. (NY Daily News)

I wonder when America will grow tired of mass shootings…

Fellow Montana blogger Don Pogreba of “The Montana Post” asked for documentation about some expenditures by the Montana Secretary of State Corey Stapleton. He was told he would have to pay $267.16 for it.

Pogreba created a “GoFundMe” page for donations and raised $1,235 (as of this morning) to help with his public records request.

Is that cool or what?

The National Hockey League (NHL) regular season started last night (Wednesday, October 4) and ends April 7, 2018. There are 82 games in the regular season. There are 31 teams in the NHL. (

The House passed a bill (H.R. 36, Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act) Tuesday that would ban abortions after 20 weeks. (The Hill)

The vote was 237-189. Representative Greg Gianforte (R-Mont.) voted for the bill.

Sometimes the weather forecasters get caught up in the excitement…

Fox News Channel’s morning show “Fox & Friends” is expanding to five hours each weekday. It will air from 4:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. eastern time. (

This is great news for President Trump…

My Kansas City Chiefs are 4-0 and the only undefeated team left in the NFL. (

When will the perfect season end?

  1. “When will the perfect season end?”

Week 9 in Dallas. They edge the Texans this week and Pitt the next week because Big Ben is a dog on the road. Oakland goes down at home in week 7 with Carr out and they beat the Broncos at home in week 8.
