Caught My Eye…

Am I doing okay? I’m President. Hey, I’m President. Can you believe it? Right? – President Donald J. Trump (May 4, 2017)

Welcome to the big show to end the week “Caught My Eye” (CME)!

If you are a first-time visitor, CME is posted right here every Friday morning. This is when I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week. I often throw in a touch of sarcasm to make you smile – or to irritate you just a little – maybe both.

Topics that I am providing commentary on today include the House Vote to Repeal Obamacare, Tester and Healthcare, Fox Farm Zoning Issue, Executive Order on Religious Liberty, and much more!

House Vote to Repeal Obamacare:

The U.S. House finally had the votes to pass Obamacare repeal/replace by a vote of 217-213. It’s called American Health Care Act (AHCA), but most folks will call it “Trumpcare.”

After the vote, several Republicans went to the White House to celebrate the victory and spike the ball.

We are still a long way from getting rid of Obamacare. The bill goes to the senate. Several members and staffers said the bill the House passed was dead on arrival.

The closer we get to the 2018 elections, there’s less a chance of something getting done.

Tester and Healthcare:

The Hill has an article about U.S. Senator Jon Tester (D-Mont.) and his thoughts about Obamacare and Trumpcare:

Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) said Thursday that he is open to repealing and replacing ObamaCare even as his party’s leadership demands that Republicans drop their effort to nix President Obama’s signature healthcare law.

“It needs to be improved. It hasn’t been improved. We can either work to improve that or repeal it and replace with something better. I’m open to either one,” Tester, who is up for reelection in a state won by President Trump, told Fox News.

Tester also told Fox News that he does not support the House healthcare bill.

Maybe Tester is really open to changes, but maybe he is just positioning himself for his campaign in 2018…

Fox Farm Zoning Issue:

It’s not really an issue anymore because the Great Falls City Commission voted for the measure. Here’s how the Great Falls Tribune reported it:

After two-and-a-half hours of review and public statements — the large bulk of which were in opposition to the construction of a new hotel adjacent to the Fox Farm/Country Club Boulevard intersection — Great Falls City Commissioners voted unanimously to approve a zoning change that will clear the way for the hotel’s construction.

I don’t live in the area, so it does not matter that much to me. It seems funny with so many people opposed to the plan, the commissioners voted against them and approved it.

I’ve lived in Great Falls for almost three decades. Some of the commissioners we’ve had over the years remind me of the saying, “The lights are on but nobody’s home.”

I imagine they will need to have a casino in the hotel. It would look bad if visitors drove a block on 10th Avenue South in Great Falls without seeing a sign for a casino.

Executive Order on Religious Liberty:

I’ve been against religious leaders being involved in politics in church or on church property except to provide voter information and urge their members to vote.

Some places just need to be sacred. The religious leaders still have the freedom to voice their opinions.

I don’t want to see campaign signs on church property, and I don’t want to see campaign literature handed out in church or even see a campaign commercial on the church’s big screen.

So I was a little worried about President Trump signing an Executive Order “Presidential Executive Order Promoting Free Speech and Religious Liberty” until I read it and heard what others had to say about it. Besides, it’s only an Executive Order. It’s not law.

See what the New York Times had to say about it HERE. Roll Call raises the issue of churches and dark money HERE.

This appears to be another thing President Trump promised but did not completly deliver.

One More Thing:

The Associated Press is reporting that Donald Trump, Jr., returns to Montana next week to campaign for Greg Gianforte – this time in Helena, Great Falls, and Sidney. Since he shot prairie dogs last time he was in Montana, I thought the following tweet was needed:

ATTENTION MONTANA PRAIRIE DOGS- Donald Trump, Jr., is coming back to Montana. This time in the Helena area May 11. Please take cover.

Let’s be careful out there…

    • Doug – looks like they are trying. I’ve seen press releases from him and from MT Dems about it. Thanks, -JmB

  1. One More Thing: If Gianforte and Trump Jr. want to really impress Montanans, and I am only speaking for me, and my neighbors, let’s have a wolf hunt and get rid of those killers and leave the prairie dogs alone!

    • Barry – I think introducing wolves to central park in NY and parks around DC would be helpful, too. -JmB

  2. Come to our farm…we have thousands of those creatures trying to nibble the crop flat before the sunshine can help it grow. Choices—bread or gopher meat?

    • LJohn 58: Maybe you can host a fundraiser at your farm! -JmB
