Monday’s Quick Hits

Today I take a look at what Montana’s elected officials (Tester, Daines, Zinke) are doing on their summer break, plus I comment about Obama and golf, Trump and nukes, and NBC’s coverage of the 2016 Summer Olympics!

Watch out…

August Recess Notes

It’s always interesting to see how our elected officials gain some publicity over the long August recess. Over the weekend, U.S. Senators Jon Tester, Steve Daines, and U.S. Representative Ryan Zinke all got a little publicity in their own special way. President Barack Obama has his own way of enjoying the August break.

Tester’s Harvest:

U.S. Senator Jon Tester used a tried and true method (his farm) to gain some attention. One local television station covered Tester during his harvest. Tester used the interview to talk about things that the U.S. Senate failed to address this year. You can watch and read the story HERE.

It’s always good to do an interview with your combine in the background…

Daines & Uber:

U.S. Senator Steve Daines used the launch of Uber in Bozeman to get some publicity. Daines was the first Montanan to take a ride in an Uber in Bozeman. Daines picked up a dozen roses for his wife Cindy and surprised her with concert tickets to the Keith Urban concert in Bozeman.

Ironically, it was all caught on video.

Daines appears to have the inside track as the most romantic member of the Montana delegation…

Zinke on Face the State:

U.S. Representative Ryan Zinke, besides bringing a few fellow members of Congress to Montana to campaign for him, appeared on Montana Television Network’s (MTN) Face the State this weekend. I could not find the video online.

Zinke knows a lot about international issues, but it puts most Montanans to sleep…

Obama Playing Golf:

When you don’t have to worry about running for reelection again like President Barack Obama, you can play golf on your August vacation – lots of golf.

One CBS report says that Obama has played 300 rounds of golf since being elected President – which angers a lot of people (maybe because they can’t play that much golf).

CBS also reports that although Obama has played a lot of golf, it’s far less than President Dwight Eisenhower, who played 800 rounds.

Meanwhile…

Trump & Nukes:

If Donald Trump wins in November some people contend there may be a greater chance of a nuclear missile launch.

There are nuclear missiles controlled by Malmstrom AFB in Montana, so that makes it interesting.

Fears are growing about Trump and nukes after The Hill reported the following from MSNBC anchor Joe Scarborough:

“Several months ago, a foreign policy expert went to advise Donald Trump,” Scarborough said. “And three times he [Trump] asked about the use of nuclear weapons — three times he asked. At one point, ‘If we have them, why can’t we use them?’”

The Trump campaign denies the report. Read the story HERE.

And finally…

The Summer Olympics:

I have been watching the Summer Olympics and cheering for the USA! It’s not all good, though.

I don’t like “tape delay” showing of sports. I very seldom will watch something if I already know the score and with today’s technology, it’s easy to find the final score or results. Here is a different view.

For example, the women’s beach volleyball Friday night was delayed in the west and I already knew the results from the swimming and women’s gymnastics from Sunday night before they were aired on NBC.

If I know that something is live and won’t be shown until later, I will search for it on Twitter to find the results. NBC should show all the sports they can during the Olympics “live” and let the chips fall where they may.

Oh, and don’t get me started on how many commercials NBC aired during the opening ceremony. One person tweeted, “Really cool of NBC to show snippets of the Olympic #OpeningCeremony between all these commercials.”

Amen to that…

  1. “But as his second term winds down, the president has retreated from the physical intensity of basketball to the relative serenity of golf. He played basketball outside the White House or Camp David in Maryland about once a month — 49 times — during his first five years in office, according to White House pool reports compiled by Mark Knoller, a CBS radio correspondent. But there is no record of the president playing since Nov. 30, 2013 (although he has been occasionally spotted shooting around at events such as the annual White House Easter Egg Roll). Meanwhile, the press corps has documented Obama playing a lot more golf, from about twice a month during his first five years in office to more than four times a month since then.”

Golf gets more coverage because he can’t just go into the backyard to play 18.

    • Doug – good point about playing 18 in the back yard. Maybe someone schooled him in basketball and he gave it up. – JmB

  2. Summer Olympics: If Hillary is elected, she is promising no commercials during the Olympics unless they are donors to the Clinton Foundation…ok, that’s a lie and you knew that, but Hilary could have said that, but later claimed she “Short Circuited” and MSNBC would have…well you get the picture.

GO USA, USA, USA and Chevrolet!

    • Barry – Thanks. It’s amazing that of all the things she could have said she used “short circuited.” That will haunt her for awhile. – JmB
