Caught My Eye…

If you want to succeed you should strike out on new paths, rather than travel the worn paths of accepted success. – John D. Rockefeller

Welcome to the big show to end the week – “Caught My Eye” (CME)!

If you are a first-time visitor, CME is posted right here every Friday morning. This is when I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week. I often throw in a touch of sarcasm to make you smile – or to irritate you just a little – maybe both.

Topics this week include the first debate, National Pro-Life Alliance, BigMike Lenahan, SCOTUS & Obama & Immigration, McConnell Kills Gun Bill, Britain to Leave EU, Any Given Wednesday, and much more!

The First Debate:

Thanks to MTN reporter Mike Dennison I was reminded of the debate this Sunday between Governor Steve Bullock and his GOP challenger, Greg Gianforte. The two will debate Sunday morning in Big Sky at the Montana Broadcasters Association’s annual convention. KRTV reports that they will televise the debate starting at 9:30 a.m. (MTN)

I’m sure it will be rebroadcast for us good little boys and girls who attend church at that time on Sunday mornings.

By the way, I don’t own a DVR because I read somewhere on the internet that the government can spy on us through DVRs. It must be true because it’s on the internet…

Here are two subjects I am interested in: Has Bullock ever said he would allow “unvetted” refuges in Montana? Gianforte needs to explain his “access lawsuit.”

I would also like to know if the candidates would push for legislation to allow independent candidates to get on the ballot in Montana the same way Republicans and Democrats candidates do.

That is all…

National Pro-Life Alliance:

For some reason, I received an “Actiongram” in the mail from National Pro-Life Alliance (NPLA) asking me to contact U.S. Senator Steve Daines and urge him to co-sponsor the Life at Conception Act (S.2464). The NPLA contends this bill “is the most feasible way to reverse Roe v. Wade and end abortion on demand.”

The letter came with four postcards to send to Daines plus a five-page letter, with one section asking me for a donation.

I do hope and pray there are fewer and fewer abortions, but they are legal, so I won’t be contacting Daines about this issue.

Roe v. Wade was decided in 1973 – that’s over 43 years ago. I bet there will be letters asking for help to overturn Roe v. Wade every year for the next 43 years.

Maybe they could combine their “Actiongram” with one to overturn Obamacare…

BigMike Lenahan:

It’s been about a week since GreaterFalls posted a column about BigMike Lenahan and the possibility that he posted some nasty comments like “Damn faggots all over Great Falls” leading up to the days that the Big Sky Pride event was being held in Great Falls.

Big Mike’s Tweets are protected and his Facebook page disappeared for some reason.

I have not seen any reports from the local media about it.

If “Big Mike” works for the local county government like some have said, what is his status? This is not the time for his superiors to be silent. I’ll keep asking…

SCOTUS & Obama & Immigration:

Let’s just all take a deep breath and relax. Our constitution just worked pretty well. I was not worried, were you?

President Obama used executive action on immigration. Many in congress and in the states disapproved of his plans. So it was challenged in court and a lower Federal Court blocked it from taking effect. It was appealed all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, where a 4-4 tie basically killed it since the lower court had already blocked it. (AP)

If the court confirms Obama’s pick for the Supreme Court that might change the outcome if it makes it back there again. If Justice Scalia had been living, most believe it would have been a 5-4 decision against Obama. Now, if Hillary Clinton is elected President…

We do need comprehensive immigration reform, but that’s about all the Republicans and Democrats agree on. The details are where there’s a problem.

McConnell Kills Gun Bill:

A new poll from CNN/ORC poll released Monday showed that 85 percent of respondents nationwide favored preventing people on government terrorism watch lists from buying guns. That did not stop Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell from killing a bipartisan gun bill to address the issue in the senate.(The Hill)

The argument to vote against the bill because some people may be on a no-fly or terrorist watch list by mistake is just ridiculous.I’ve always believed that McConnell was an ass. His latest tactics prove it.

Britain to Leave EU:

52% of Britain voted yesterday to leave the European Union (EU). It was a pretty shocking vote. Prime Minister David Cameron was on the side that wanted to stay in the EU, so he announced his resignation earlier today.

It’s going to be a little unstable in Britain and in Europe for the foreseeable future. More countries may decide to leave the EU.

Read more from the Associated Press about the vote and the aftermath HERE.

Any Given Wednesday:

Bill Simmons is kind of hero to me. He started his own website – kind of blog – way back in 1997. It was called “The Boston Sports Guy” and after it took off he was recruited by ESPN. I love Simmons’ writing style.

He now has a website called “The Ringer” and he works for HBO. On Wednesday his new show, “Any Given Wednesday” made its debut on HBO. His first two guests were Charles Barkley and Ben Affleck. There was some salty language but I enjoyed the show. It was fast-paced, amusing, and interesting. It’s only 30 minutes in length and it went by quickly. Check it out HERE.

Best of luck to Simmons with his new adventures.
