Thursday Numbers

From every mountain side
Let Freedom ring.
-Samuel F. Smith, “America”

Welcome to “Thursday Numbers!” In case you’re new around here, “Thursday Numbers” is the weekly column where I take a look at the numbers that are in the news (in descending order) and provide commentary sometimes sprinkled with sarcasm.

This week’s topics include the Hillary for America campaign, Jeb Bush, Ben Carson, Transportation Security Administration, unemployment, Instagram accounts, driving while impaired, Cuba, top songs for Independence Day, Republican candidates, and much more!

45,000,000

The Hillary for America campaign says that since the launch of her campaign in April, they have raised more than $45 million. (Source)

That is a good start…

8,300,000

The presidential campaign of Republican Ben Carson claims they raised $8.3 million since the launch of his campaign in March. (Source)

Like I said several months ago, I don’t believe Carson will be President of the United States.

3,000,000

USA Today reports that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) paid passengers $3 million over the last five years for claims that airport security screeners broke, lost or stole their luggage or items inside, according to a review of about 50,000 complaints.

I think everyone has a story about TSA and luggage…

281,000

That’s how many people filed new claims for unemployment last week, which was an increase from the week before. (Source)

100

Here are the 100 Best Instagram Accounts from Rolling Stone. Can you guess who is number one?

79

That’s the percentage of people who believe that driving while impaired by alcohol is a “very serious” problem on the road today according to Gallup Polling. Gallup also reported that alcohol “swamps public concern about people driving while impaired by prescription painkillers (41%), marijuana (29%) or prescription antidepressants (28%).” (Source)

It’s too bad that our legislators, prosecutors, and judges don’t feel the same way.

54

More than 54 years ago the United States closed its embassy in Havana, Cuba. Yesterday President Barack Obama announced that the United States and Cuba have agreed to reopen embassies in each other’s capitals. (Source)

33

Republican Presidential candidate Jeb Bush released 33 years of tax records this week, which shows he is worth between $19 million and $22 million. (Source)

Even after this release, Jeb Bush seems like a pretty boring person.

Here are 25 Essential Songs about America for your 4th of July weekend!

Is this a great country or what?

14

With the addition of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, there are now 14 Republican candidates vying for the GOP 2016 presidential nomination. (Source)

There may be two more – it looks like we’re waiting on Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and Ohio Governor John Kasich to come to the big party. Kasich is probably the best qualified of all candidates.

If the 25 songs (listed above) were too much, here are 10 Independence Day Songs You Absolutely Have to Play at Your July 4 BBQ.

Let’s be careful out there!

  1. I get your frustration about DUI’s, but locking them up does nothing but break county budgets, they have a 24/7 program which makes dui’s go in once a day and blow to check for booze. They pay for it. They are working, if they have a job. Jail does nothing, or very little to deter this behavior. Just got a Facebook post that one of our nieces lost their home in Wenatchee fire. So sad for everyone,

    • Thanks Dave – sorry to hear about your niece’s home. As for DUIs, I just think we’ve got to do more. It’s terrible that we have have people with multiple DUIs still getting more. I like the 24/7 DUI program and think they are a step in the right direction. -JmB
