Campaign 2014: Land & Money

Today I write about a new commercial from the Montanans for Lewis campaign, recent fundraising numbers in the U.S. Senate race, and press releases!

There’s much more so read on…

This Land is…

The Montanans for Lewis campaign released a new ad called “This Land” yesterday (October 6). It is a 30-second ad that uses the “This Land is Your Land” song which was written by Woody Guthrie.

Here are the “new” lyrics:

This land is your land, this land our land, but Ryan Zinke would sell it off man. To the highest bidder, to out-of-state-billionaires, with Zinke less access for you and me. He sold more elk tags, to out-of-staters…and got a zero from the Sportsmen Alliance…with Zinke less access for you and me.

According to the Lewis campaign the ad details, “Ryan Zinke’s dangerous and irresponsible plan to sell off Montana’s beloved public lands to the out-of-state billionaires bankrolling his campaign.”

I imagine that Guthrie would like John Lewis’ stand on public lands, but I’m not sure he would like the “newer” version of his song. It would have been better with the original version and just on-screen info about Zinke’s views on public lands – with the beautiful scenery from around the state.

Making sure our public lands are protected is important to many Montanans. Once they are gone we can never get them back. It is a key issue in the state.

Unfortunately, this ad fails to give it the attention it deserves. I give Lewis’ “This Land” ad a six out of 10 (6/10).  Your can watch it HERE.

Money Talks:

Tailored suits, chauffeured cars
Fine hotels and big cigars
Up for grabs, up for a price
-AC/DC – Money Talks

Although AC/DC did not write “Money Talks” about campaign donations, it’s a good theme song to use when writing about fundraising in the political world.

Current U.S. Representative and Senate candidate Steve Daines reportedly raised $1.8 million between July and September. His staff says he has $1.6 million on hand for the final month of the election.

What this basically means (for those of you who don’t understand campaigns which seems to be most Montana reporters) is that staffers and volunteers will be fed free pizza and cheap hot dogs during the final push and that Daines will be able to “address” any issues that come up in the final 30 days.

Deep thought – I have always wondered if multi-millionaires ever just lie down on the floor and make snow angels in the piles of money they have lying around…

As for Amanda Curtis, her campaign reported raising $554,000 since she became a candidate and has $505,000 on hand. That’s pretty good considering she started at zero in August.

The Curtis campaign also sent a press release about Curtis gaining ground against Steve Daines. The Curtis campaign says a new Gravis poll of 535 likely Montana voters shows she has cut the lead of Daines by seven points since she entered the race.

But Daines is still comfortably ahead 54-41. As Lloyd Christmas would say, “So you’re telling me there’s a chance…YEAH!”

Press Releases:

As we enter the final month, I’d like to thank the Montana Democratic Party, the Montana Republican Party, Ryan Zinke, John Lewis, and Amanda Curtis for including The Western Word on your press release lists.

Thanks to Sen. Jon Tester and Sen. John Walsh for adding The Western Word to your senate press release lists.

Montana candidates and elected officials can send press releases to Western_Word@yahoo.com, follow me on Twitter @TheWesternWord, and “Like” The Western Word’s Facebook page HERE.

  1. The Curtis campaign also sent a press release about Curtis gaining ground against Steve Daines. The Curtis campaign says a new Gravis poll of 535 likely Montana voters shows she has cut the lead of Daines by seven points since she entered the race.

In the past Gravis had been excoriated as a fraud by Democratic Underground and Daily Kos. Neither Real Clear Politics nor HuffPost Pollster will use them in their combined poll analysis. The latest NYT/CBS Yougov poll shows Daines stretching his lead by 3 points to 21 over Curtis. Perhaps the Curtis campaign will explain their reliance on Gravis to the exclusion of NYT/CBS Yougov.

    • Craig – Like most campaigns, they will use the poll that serves them best. -JmB
