By now everyone has heard that Naval Captain (O-6) Owen Honors was relieved of duty for showing his crew videos that some people deemed “raunchy.”
His career is basically over.
Captain Honors was the Executive Officer (XO) on the USS Enterprise in 2006-2007 when the videos (called XO Movie Night) were played on board the aircraft carrier. Honors was then promoted to Commander of the USS Enterprise and that was the position in which he was relieved of duty.
Someone recently (this is 2011) leaked the videos to a newspaper in Virginia and that is when it became a problem – mostly in the civilian world – and then since some civilians (also called politicians) have a say over our military it became a political problem.
I watched the videos. I don’t think Captain Honors can make it as an actor and there won’t be any Oscar nominations coming his way. I served over a decade in the military and I’ve seen better videos and I have seen a lot worse. Sure, some of the parts were inappropriate and a little raunchy, but we live in a politically correct (PC) world these days so someone had to pay the price because there were parts of the videos that were not in line with the PC police.
