Orlando…

Congratulations Florida, you just had the worst mass shooting in our country’s history.

Maybe that’s a little cold, but it’s the truth.

Early Sunday morning, 29-year-old Omar Mateen of Fort Pierce, Florida, opened fire at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, killing at least 50 people and injuring 53 others. During the shooting, Mateen allegedly called 911 and professed allegiance to the leader of the Islamic State, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. (AP)

Mateen used an assault rifle and handgun to do his killing. There have been reports that he had been investigated by the FBI, which is another problem altogether.

Before you start thinking that “things” will change now since there’s a new mass shooting record, don’t bet on it. Our elected officials didn’t do one damned thing after a man killed 20 children (ages six and seven) and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary school, so they will do even less since the Orlando killing happened at an LGBT bar – even if it set a new record for mass killings in the United States.
