The Sunday Message

Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves. – Abraham Lincoln

This coming Wednesday is the Fourth of July also called “Independence Day.” There will be parades, picnics, and fireworks.

I hope you have a safe and happy fourth!

Since it’s an election year, there will be candidates or their volunteers in the parades letting us know they are patriotic and that they love the USA. They will shake hands, kiss babies, and maybe hand out some candy.

The Fourth of July is also the number one beer-drinking holiday, which means the saying, “Hold my beer and watch this” is probably something we’ll hear a lot.

This week I posted a poll result from Rasmussen that said 31% of likely voters said it’s likely that the United States will experience a second civil war sometime in the next five years.

I hope not. Our country is really divided these days and it worries me. We may not like some of our elected officials, but we need to love our country.

Please join me in praying for our country over the Fourth of July holiday.

Have a great week!

Happy Independence Day 2016

We have so much as a Nation to be thankful – we should especially be thankful for those who have fought and died so that we may have freedom and liberty. My prayers go out to those protecting us today.

I posted this on Friday, but since today is Independence Day, I thought I would post it again. WalletHub takes a look at the 4th of July By the Numbers:

Caught My Eye…

Patriotism is easy to understand in America. It means looking out for yourself by looking out for your country. – Calvin Coolidge

Welcome to July and to the big show to end the week – “Caught My Eye” (CME)!

If you are a first-time visitor, CME is posted right here every Friday morning. This is when I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week. I often throw in a touch of sarcasm to make you smile – or to irritate you just a little – maybe both.

Topics this week include exodus from the GOP, The Western Word poll, Veterans Suicide Hotline, Clinton & Lynch Meeting, WalletHub’s 4th of July by the Numbers, and much more!

The Rocket’s Red Glare…

If you’re reading this column then congratulations for surviving another Fourth of July holiday!

According to an article in Newsweek which cites data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, there are an average 230 fireworks-related injuries near and on the 4th of July.

There was a death in Billings. The Billings Gazette reports that a 32 year-old man was hit by a mortar round and killed in what was called a “horrible” fireworks accident.

Probably the most publicized death this year was the 22-year-old man from Maine, who tried to fire a mortar off the top of his head and was killed when it ignited. Reports say he had been drinking…

Locally, the Great Falls Tribune reported that Great Falls firefighters responded to 51 fire calls in a 24-hour period beginning on the Fourth of July and ending at 7:30 a.m. Sunday.

Great Falls Battalion Chief Bob Shupe put it all in perspective when he told the Tribune that it’s only a matter of time before the misuse of fireworks in the city causes a major problem.
