Thursday Numbers

Some people strengthen the society just by being the kind of people they are. – John W. Gardner

Welcome to “Thursday Numbers!” In case you’re a first-time visitor, this is the weekly column where I take a look at the numbers that are in the news (in descending order) and provide commentary sometimes sprinkled with just a little bit of sarcasm.

This week’s topics include World Series viewers, the Royals parade, unemployment, the garbage man, Griz/Cats/Saints & playoffs, area code, Packers & Broncos, election results, Jeb Bush, the undefeated, and much more!

Playoffs…PLAYOFFS?

For many people the fact that your NFL team’s season is over won’t set in until next week when your team is not playing.

For twelve teams, the journey continues.

The Patriots, Broncos, Steelers, Colts, Bengals, and Ravens made the playoffs for the AFC. The Seahawks, Packers, Cowboys, Panthers, Cardinals, and Lions made the playoffs for the NFC.

NFL 2014: My Predictions

Are you ready for some football? The NFL season kicks off Thursday night with the Seattle Seahawks hosting the Green Bay Packers. One of these teams will play in the Super Bowl – read on to find out which team I pick.

Unfortunately, the Thursday game will be televised on KBGF (NBC in Great Falls) which is an analog low power television station. The only time I watch the local NBC station is when football is on because the picture is terrible.

If you follow me on Twitter or read this blog very much, you know that I am a Kansas City Chiefs fan.

Last year we (Chiefs) made the playoffs – and we blew a 28 point lead in the second half against the Colts. So, that makes me wonder if it’s better to not make the playoffs instead of getting in and losing like that. Discuss amongst yourselves. I am still hurting.

There is a ray of sunshine. The Great Falls (MT) Tribune Sports Editor, Scott Mansch, picked the Kansas City Chiefs and the Green Bay Packers to play in the Super Bowl – I hope he was not referring to Super Bowl I.

I have always been pretty bad at predicting who will win each division in the NFL. The last time I picked the division winners was for the 2011 season. There are eight divisions in the NFL. For the 2011 season I picked the winners in just three divisions.

So here goes – I’ve read the stories, checked the schedules, read what the teams and the fans are saying and here are my predictions for the National Football League’s 2014 season:

2011 NFL Predictions: The American Football Conference

Growing up a Kansas City Chiefs fan let me have just a little excitement when Lenny Dawson led them to a Super Bowl victory way back in January 1970 – of course there were the “Marty Years” (1989-1998) in which we won a lot of games, put fans in the seats, but did not get to the Promised Land.  Last year there was some joy – the Chiefs contended and made the playoffs.

I guess the only big question left to be answered is which will come first: another Chiefs Super Bowl victory or my death?  This year the Chiefs reap the benefits of being the 2010 AFC West Champions – three primetime night games – and a much tougher schedule!

The AFC is where my heart is and my team is the Kansas City Chiefs. That will never change!  So this year I start off with my predictions for the American Football Conference.

Here’s hoping your team has a great year and you have something to talk about after Christmas…like the playoffs!  (more…)
