Thursday Numbers

Some people strengthen the society just by being the kind of people they are. – John W. Gardner

Welcome to “Thursday Numbers!” In case you’re a first-time visitor, this is the weekly column where I take a look at the numbers that are in the news (in descending order) and provide commentary sometimes sprinkled with just a little bit of sarcasm.

This week’s topics include World Series viewers, the Royals parade, unemployment, the garbage man, Griz/Cats/Saints & playoffs, area code, Packers & Broncos, election results, Jeb Bush, the undefeated, and much more!

Caught My Eye…

Welcome to the “Black Friday” edition of Caught My Eye!

If you are a first-time visitor, “Caught My Eye” is posted right here every Friday morning! This is when I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week. I often throw in a touch of sarcasm to make you smile – or to irritate you just a little – or maybe both.

Today I write about secret meetings, FCS football, Montana Supreme Court, things are going well, birthday, #ShopSmall, plus we have a winner who is Making Montana Proud!

Just Football…

Just about every Tuesday during football season, I take a few minutes to write about my favorite sport, football.  For those wondering, I did play the game and as the years go by, I think I was better than I really was…

Now I look at the game from a fan’s point of view.

Last week was a tough one for me in my NFL football pick contest – I ended up getting only nine correct out of the 13 games – way behind in wins to get a free pizza.  Somebody from Montana picked all 13 correctly and won last week’s contest both locally and nationally.  Congrats.  This week is a whole new week!

This week in the NFL section I take a look at the Lions, Packers and the Bears, the Chiefs, Tebow and the Broncos, winless teams, a FedEx Air Player of the week nominee, and a NFL birthday.  In the college football section, I look at the Big 12, a firing, an unsportsmanlike penalty, the Griz, the Cats, and the Frontier Conference.  Here we go… Continue reading

Caught My Eye…

It’s Friday, so it is time for another edition of Caught My Eye! This weekly column takes a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week – sometimes with just a little sarcasm!

Here we are in the midst of the Christmas season! Like most men, my shopping has not started yet. I like to wait until about December 24 so it’s more of a challenge! Normally on Christmas Eve, we men hit the stores like we are getting ready to ascend Mount Everest and get all our shopping done in a few hours.

Then we come home and ask questions like, “Honey, where’s the tape?” or “Do we have wrapping paper?”

It’s not too late to get into the Christmas spirit. In the last couple of weeks, I attended some Christmas programs to get me in the spirit. The local school programs I attended were wonderful!

Also, there’s nothing like a walk through the local mall to get me in the Christmas Spirit – you can also scope out some items when you return on Christmas Eve to do your shopping…and sneak a peek inside Victoria’s Secret…

Don’t forget to give to those less fortunate this season. Times are tough so if you have a little extra this year, share it – buy some meals for folks at your local rescue mission, drop some cash in the red kettles, buy an extra toy and donate it to Toys for Tots. You’ll feel better for it!

Everybody deserves a nice Christmas!

So now, sit back, relax, and enjoy this week’s edition of Caught My Eye… Continue reading

Just Football…

There are lots of big games coming up this next weekend for your viewing pleasure and much to talk about from last weekend’s game.

College Football Playoffs

Yes, there are playoffs at every level of College Football except the major college level. It’s nice to see National Champions decided through a playoff system instead of on paper!

Eastern Washington:

Congrats to the Eastern Washington University (EWU) Eagles team! They beat North Dakota State University (NDSU) last Saturday to head to the semi-finals. NDSU had beaten the Montana State Bobcats in the playoffs. EWU will host Villanova on Friday night in a semifinal game. The game is scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN2 at 6:00 p.m. (Mountain Time).

The bad news is that EWU’s outstanding all America running back Taiwan Jones has a fractured foot and is not expected to play Friday night. Jones carried the ball 20 times for 230 yards against NDSU.

Carroll College:

Montana’s best college football team, the Carroll College Fighting Saints, are once again playing for the NAIA National Championship. They will play Saturday against Sioux Falls (SD) in Rome, Georgia. According to this article, the game starts at 2:30 p.m. (Mountain Time) and will be broadcast on CBS College Sports.

Hopefully the local CBS stations or some local station will broadcast it for all of Montana to see.

BOWL TIME! Continue reading
