The Monday Memo

Let’s kick the week off with some common-sense commentary about the following topics:

  • Robert Mueller
  • Update- GF City Manager Salary
  • Daines/Sheehy Missed Votes
  • Weekend Rallies at Capitol
  • One More Thing

ROBERT MUELLER:

Whether you lean left, right, or center, we can surely agree that the office of the presidency demands more dignity than gloating over a person’s passing. To see a president express ‘gladness’ at the death of a man who dedicated his life to this country—from the battlefields of Vietnam to the FBI—should be a point of shared disgust for all Americans.

The official White House Rapid Response 47 account even forwarded the hateful post from Trump to their 1.6 million followers.

Mueller was a graduate of Princeton University and New York University. He served as a Marine Corps officer during the Vietnam War, receiving a Bronze Star for heroism and a Purple Heart. He later attended the University of Virginia School of Law. Mueller was a registered Republican in Washington, D.C., and was appointed or reappointed to Senate-confirmed positions by presidents George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama. (Source)

While former presidents like George W. Bush and Barack Obama have praised Robert Mueller as one of the most respected public servants of our time, President Trump’s response stands as a stark departure from presidential tradition. A man who shed blood for this country in uniform deserves far better than to have his death cheered by the person sitting in the Oval Office.

UPDATE- GF CITY MANAGER SALARY:

Last week, I wrote about The Electric report that Great Falls City Manager Greg Doyon was given a favorable review during a special meeting on March 17 and a 4 percent raise. Doyon’s new annual salary is $216,146.93.

The Electric has a Facebook page where the article was posted, and Great Falls City Commissioner Rick Tryon tried to justify the raise by writing:

Greg Doyon and his 18 years of experience in Great Falls, his hard work pulling the City’s fat out of the fire when we could have been forced to declare bankruptcy after his predecessor got us into the Electric City Power fiasco, and his widely recognized fiscally conservative management skills and leadership ability is worth every single penny we pay him.

Every. Single. Penny.

I am sure Doyon is a nice fellow, but I don’t agree with Tryon that he is worth every penny. Doyon makes more than the governor. He makes more than a U.S. Senator and a U.S. Representative.

DAINES/SHEEHY MISSED VOTES:

I happened to see Montana’s two U.S. Senators missed votes recently. Steve Daines and Tim Sheehy missed three votes on March 20/21. Vote numbers 59, 60, and 61

While Senators may miss votes, when they do, I think they should issue a press release telling constituents why they were absent and how they would have voted.

In April 2025, I respectfully asked Sheehy why he missed a vote and never received a reply.

U.S. Senators are paid $174,000 per year. They are our employees. They should be accountable to us.

WEEKEND RALLIES AT CAPITOL:

Last week, I wrote about the Montana Free Press (MTFP) article reporting that the Montana Department of Administration announced new rules prohibiting weekend events that use equipment such as sound stages on the Capitol grounds in Helena.

I wrote: “In a stunning display of efficiency, Montana has discovered that the best way to save money is to make sure nobody can protest when they actually have the day off.”

According to MTN News in Helena, Claudia Clifford, of the group Indivisible Helena, is working on preparations for a “No Kings” rally Saturday, March 28 – part of a third series of nationwide protests against the Trump administration. She told MTN late Friday that the Montana Department of Administration had confirmed they would waive the new policies and allow a permit for the rally to be held in the Capitol’s flag plaza on a weekend.

It’s truly refreshing to see a flicker of common sense finally emerge from a place that’s spent so long perfecting its absence.

ONE MORE THING:

Most people have the will to win; few have the will to prepare to win. – Bobby Knight
