And just like that, it’s September! Here are the topics for today’s column:

DAINES, ZINKE, DOWNING, & SHEEHY:
Members of the U.S. Senate and U.S. House return to Washington, D.C., this week.
Maybe I missed it, but I did not hear about any Town Hall meetings with members of the Montana Congressional delegation. Republican U.S. Senator Steve Daines, Republican U.S. Representative Ryan Zinke, and Republican U.S. Representative Troy Downing are all up for reelection in 2026.
I think the highlight of U.S. Senator Tim Sheehy’s August recess was that he went camping with his kids.
I think it is cowardly for these elected officials not to meet with Montanans.
Several sources are reporting that the most urgent task for Congress is to avoid a government shutdown on Sept. 30, when federal funding runs out. (Source) I am sure they will work something out after running right up to the deadline and after a lot of bloviating from both sides.
Here are two different articles about Congress returning from the August recess and what they face: PBS. AP.
LABOR DAY EVENT:
I saw that Great Falls Rising held an event in Great Falls at the Gibson Park bandshell. KRTV (MTN) in Great Falls covered the event and reported:
Dozens of residents gathered at the Gibson Park bandshell on Monday, September 1, 2025, to raise their voices, share their concerns, and celebrate Labor Day at Great Falls Rising’s ‘Have Your Say’ event.
The non-partisan grassroots organization invited community members to spend their Labor Day afternoon listening to short soapbox speeches from residents who spoke about issues close to their hearts, from workers’ rights to environmental concerns, education, healthcare, and more.
Sounds like this was a great opportunity to speak and get some things off your chest!
There were many “Workers over Billionaires” protests across the country. You can read one report HERE.
TRUMP’S WORLD:
President Donald Trump did not have any public events for a few days, and social media went wild with speculation that he had died. Trump finally showed up Saturday morning, leaving the White House for golf. (Source)
On Sunday, Trump posted a message on social media saying that former Major League Baseball player Roger Clemens should be in the Hall of Fame (HOF):
I hope that Major League Baseball is getting ready to put Roger Clemens in the Hall of Fame, a place where he has belonged for many years! 354 Wins, second in Total Strike Outs, Low Earned Run Average, played in 6 World Series, 7 Cy Young Awards (A Record, by 3!), and was, during much of his career, unhittable. Never took drugs, there is no proof that he took drugs, has steadfastly refused that he took drugs. (Source)
I agree with the President about Roger Clemens. He never tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs. He should be in the HOF.
Yesterday (Monday), Trump posted the following on social media:
As President of the United States of America, I am pleased to announce that Rudy Giuliani, the greatest Mayor in the history of New York City, and an equally great American Patriot, will receive THE PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM, our Country’s highest civilian honor. Details as to time and place to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!! (Source)
On Sunday, the Associated Press (AP) reported that Giuliani is recovering from a fractured vertebra and other injuries following a car crash in New Hampshire in which he was a passenger, a spokesperson for the former New York City mayor said Sunday.
I liked the leadership Giuliani displayed during the aftermath of the terrorist attack on 9/11. In recent years, Giuliani has become more of a fruitcake and a conspiracist. Of course, the President can award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to whomever he wants.
ONE MORE THING:
I wish I was in a gang so I’d know what to do with my hands in pictures…
## THE END ##

Thanks for the shoutout to Great Falls Rising. – Melissa Smith, Great Falls Rising Board Member
On August 21, Troy Downing made an impromptu appearance at the weekly Hometown Helena meeting. He spoke briefly about a few issues and took a few questions. It was sort of a ‘mini’ town hall. The audience was attentive and polite. Downing listed a number of towns where he had appeared over the past couple weeks. While I may not agree with him, he at least has been making some contact with constituents.
Good to know. Thanks. I’m happy to see him interacting with constituents. -JmB
Sheehy and Gianforte were joined at the hip for photo ops over the last week. They even drove an electric car in Bozeman, so I wonder if the coal burning steam engine is running out of style with these Magats.
There is no way egomaniacs like Tim Sheehy and Greg don’t make a run for Prez in the next decade. The Anger management/can’t shoot straight ticket.
Not sure how much motivation Democrats will have to support the funding bill, since even if they succeeded in getting some priority funded in the law Trump will impound or divert or simply not spend the money.
