Tuesday’s Quick Hits

Quote for the Day…

The price of your character will always be found in the value of your integrity. – Unknown

In today’s column, I take a quick look at these people/issues:

  • Special Master
  • MAGA Republicans
  • Election Day 2022
  • Reading Assignments

The Associated Press (AP) and several other sources reported that in a legal victory for former President Donald Trump, U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon on Monday granted his request for a special master to review documents seized by the FBI from his Florida home and temporarily halted the Justice Department’s use of the records for investigative purposes.

Cannon was nominated by Trump for her current position. (Source)

This is a win for Trump – a win to delay the investigation.

It does not take a “Special Master” to realize that 300 classified documents were being kept unsecure at Mar-a-Lago. (Source) There were also several files marked classified that had the documents missing and unaccounted for. Trump “entertained” several foreign leaders at Mar-a-Lago, so it’s not out of the question to assume that while Trump entertained, someone was taking those classified files.

There was an opinion piece by Greg Sargent in the Washington Post titled, “MAGA Republicans are seething with rage because Biden hit his target.”

I know some of the MAGA Republicans in Montana went over the deep end after hearing Biden’s speech.

I watched Biden’s speech, and it was mild compared to the things that Trump has said over the past few years.

Even in a speech this weekend, Trump called Biden “an enemy of the state” and in the past has put down women, disabled people, and minorities. He never acted “presidential” before, during, or after he was President.

One of our local elected MAGA officials was very bothered by Biden’s speech.

In one post he wrote, “What a horrible, hate-filled, despicable, creepy little man Grandpa Joe proved himself to be in his unhinged screed in prime time Thursday night.” He closes the post with, “Biden is a clown, but because of his position he’s a dangerous clown.”

In another post, he says, “…spending taxpayer dollars and using the trappings of the office of POTUS to smear millions of our fellow citizens and further disgrace and divide our country in a desperate campaign speech.
What a bizarre, disturbing, and shameful spectacle.”

In still another post, he says “But citizens, regardless of party affiliation, should go to high alert when the POTUS starts name calling and chucking verbal rotten tomatoes at half of We the People.”

Trump once said, “I love the poorly educated!” Several of his “poorly educated” MAGA folks are currently holding elective office in Montana as well as posting and commenting on social media.

  1. I caught our local elected MAGA officials’ musical act in a local saloon a couple times. Made any problems I thought I had seem small. I’m sure the monthly income from the commish job helps.

    • That casual (or overt) racism has been a regular feature of Montana bar talk at least since I was in high school. Long long before MAGA. Didn’t register back then because that was the “normal”. Really strikes you when you come home after many years.

The big difference now is we have Facebook and the like to showcase our ignorant racists to the world.

I’ve been in that bar. It is absolutely nothing special. There’s much better in Big Timber. Vote with your feet.

      • Let me be clear, the normal I was referring to was a time when democrats could expect a reasonable chance of being elected to office here in Montana. I don’t see that happening any more. With the overwhelming Maga migration into all areas of the state, I see Montana as perpetually red from here on out.
I can’t see anything on the horizon to reverse that trend or prevent it. And with complete MAGA control, the damage to our state will be swift, horrific, and in many cases irreversible. It’s a very depressing situation to those of us who love this place dearly and have been here most of our lives and have worked hard to preserve it. I got here just after the constitutional convention and haven’t been out of the state much since. I’ve seen all the changes. But change happens everywhere. Best we can do is try to learn from the mistakes of other states. It’s still worth fighting for, although I do know some people my age who’ve given up and moved to places like Mexico. Who wants to live in a state that’s been bought up by billionaires and infested with MAGAs?
