Caught My Eye…

Quote for the Day…

Don’t study me…you won’t graduate. – Unknown

Caught My Eye (CME) is the once-a-week column that is posted every Friday morning. This is when I look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week.

Here are some of the things that “Caught My Eye” this week:

  • Battle for the Soul of the Nation
  • Apprenticeships in Montana
  • The Western Word
  • Abortion
  • One More Thing

I watched President Joe Biden deliver what may have been his best speech since he became President. It was pointed. One report called it “blistering.”

It was called “Battle for the Soul of the Nation.”

With this speech, the political battle is on for 2022 and 2024.

I agree with Biden with what he said about Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans:

“Too much of what’s happening in our country today is not normal. Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent extremism that threatens the very foundations of our Republic.”

Biden added:

“MAGA Republicans have made their choice. They embrace anger. They thrive on chaos. They live not in the light of truth but in the shadow of lies.”

The President also rightly said, “MAGA forces are determined to take this country backwards. Backwards to an America where there is no right to choose, no right to privacy. No right to contraception, no right to marry who you love.”

Biden did say that “Not every Republican, not even a majority of Republicans, are MAGA Republicans. But there’s no question that the Republican Party today is dominated by Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans.”

That is what is happening in Montana. The MAGA nutjobs have taken over. This campaign season, ask those running if they voted for Trump. That’s really all you need to know this election season.

You can watch the speech HERE.

This has been the season (for me and my family) of things breaking like our water heater, the washer, and a vehicle. I also broke down and needed some maintenance with the three-day stay in the local hospital.

If you’ve tried to get a plumber or electrician in Great Falls to respond quickly then you know how frustrating that can be. That is why I am excited about the apprenticeship programs in Montana that will add skilled people.

In an August 31 press release, Montana Governor Greg Gianforte announced the number of new apprenticeships in Montana this year is on track to surpass the number for 2018, 2019, and 2020 combined.

Gianforte added:

“A four-year college degree isn’t the path for everyone, and Montana needs more carpenters, plumbers, welders, and electricians like those I met today. Through apprenticeships, we’re promoting access to good-paying careers, and it’s paying off. Montana has added a record 700 new apprentices so far this year.”

Good deal. I can’t wait to get my drips fixed…

A right-wing MAGA conservative blog here in Montana ran a poll asking readers about their views on abortion. I don’t think the results were what they imagined.

About 55% said abortion should be illegal after 12-14 weeks into a pregnancy except in cases of rape, incest, or life-threatening risk to the mother. Another 26% said abortion should be legal for any reason at any time during pregnancy, including up until birth, with no exceptions.

Only 20% said life begins at conception and abortion should not be legal at any time for any reason.

So about 81% of those who took part in the poll are in favor of some sort of abortion access.

I am not sure if the poll is closed or not. It was posted on August 22.

Also, the blog is requesting that all local candidates answer the abortion question to have their responses posted by the blog. If I were a non-MAGA candidate, I would find another way to get my message out, but that is just me.

A Gallup poll from May said that a record high number of people now identify as pro-choice. Just 39% identified as pro-life.

This is one of the issues that Democrats can use to win seats this November.

You may have heard former President Trump’s lawyer comparing the keeping of classified documents in Mar-a-Lago to nothing more than not returning an overdue library book.

Trump’s lawyer, Mr. Jim Trusty, told Fox News:

“I mean that’s not the stuff of an urgent nuclear-based espionage-type investigation. That’s the stuff of an overdue library book, and people that are perhaps holding this president to a different standard than anyone else.” (Source)

Beam me up, Scotty!

  1. I suppose the MAGA Conservative (MAGAts) snowflakes are feeling pretty darned triggered as we go into the Labor Day weekend. I would like console them with some advice that they so graciously and gleefully shared a few years ago.

    Suck it up buttercups!

  2. At least with a library book that was checked out, you had lawful permission to take it home in the first place and didn’t just abscond with it contrary to the law.

But otherwise, yeah – Top Secret government documents not a bit different than “Horton Hears a Who”.

  3. In order for democracy to work, both sides must operate in good faith. The MAGAs choose not to. And they never will. They are not the loyal opposition. They are not real bright folks who have an understanding of democracy. Their hatred has made them believe that authoritarianism would be better. And that’s real sad for us all.
