In today’s column, I take a quick look at these people/issues:
- Seventh or Subsequent DUI
- Term Limits For Justices
- Reading Assignments
SEVENTH OR SUBSEQUENT DUI:
I suspect someone in Montana holds the record, probably double digits, for the most DUIs.
We know that Montana has a lot of drunk drivers. One article says we rank third in the nation. Making people pay harsher penalties for drunk driving should be something that every legislator could agree on.
The Helena Independent Record reports that Gilberto Cantu was charged with his seventh or subsequent DUI, a felony, after an officer pulled him over for not having a functioning license plate lamp. The IR also reports that his criminal history showed seven prior DUI convictions.
TERM LIMITS FOR JUSTICES:
The Associated Press (AP) reported that about 2 in 3 Americans say they favor term limits or a mandatory retirement age for Supreme Court justices, according to a new poll that finds a sharp increase in the percentage of Americans saying they have “hardly any” confidence in the court.
The poll is from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.
The poll also found that a month following the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, more Americans disapprove than approve of the decision – 53% to 30%. Democrats and women are more likely to disapprove than Republicans or men.
The poll finds that 67% of Americans support a proposal to set a specific number of years that justices serve instead of life terms, including 82% of Democrats and 57% of Republicans. Views are similar about a requirement that justices retire by a specific age.
As long as the Supreme Court justices can do their jobs, I am fine with them staying on the court into their 70s. As for a person being elected President in the 70s, I am against that. The job of President is harder. Donald Trump had, and Joe Biden is having problems keeping up with the demands of the job.
