The Monday Memo

Quote for the day…

The days that break you are the days that make you. – Anonymous

Today’s independent commentary deals with these issues:

  • The Western Word Poll
  • Great Falls School Board
  • Missoula County Public School District
  • Reading Assignments

This week’s poll question asks, “Do you approve of Steve Daines’ visit to Ukraine?” (Background)

The results will be posted later this week.

The Great Falls School Board election is on May 3. The ballots are being mailed to voters this week.

I think the current school board has done an outstanding job the past two years in dealing with the pandemic and the crazies from the MAGA crowd.

People ask me all the time about my preferences for different elective offices. I don’t normally announce my preferences, but this time I will because of all the crap that the school board and the school system have been through the past few years.

I will be voting for Mark Finnicum, Gordon Johnson, Nathan Reiff, and Russell Herring. If there was one more vacancy, I would vote for Amie Thompson.

These candidates are very-well qualified.

Some people were in an uproar about an assignment that was given to students about sexual orientation in Missoula. ABC/FOX Montana reported that some found the assignment to be inappropriate and offensive.

After the smoke cleared, I think the issue was more about miscommunication than anything. It was reported that Missoula County Public Schools (MCPS) says an immediate investigation was launched as the handout was brought to their attention and has since been removed as part of the curriculum.

MCPS told ABC/FOX this:

“The handout was intended as a demonstration exercise to show how certain questions can be seen as offensive. Students were not expected to provide written answers. The questions on the handout were intended for discussion purposes only and are not part of our approved curriculum.”

I guess the questions were offensive to some and they decided to lob grenades at the school district instead of following procedures.

The horror. The horror…

  2. I have no quarrel with Daines visiting Ukraine, per se. The more Congressional involvement and input the better for our efforts to support their desperate defense against Putin’s relentless determination to force Ukraine into the status of ‘client state’ by installing a puppet regime through blatant terrorism and atrocities.

What I certainly will have a quarrel with is the inevitability of Daines’ descent into partisan politicking, name-calling, and egregious recitation of the flood of lies that will pour out of the far-right.
