Today’s independent commentary deals with these people/issues:
- Electoral College
- Dr. Jill Biden

ELECTORAL COLLEGE:
In case you missed it, today (Monday) is the day Presidential electors are meeting across the United States to formally choose Joe Biden as the nation’s next president. (AP)
The Associated Press (AP) is reporting that President-elect Joe Biden will address the nation Monday evening.
The AP also reports that the Electoral College results will be sent to Washington and tallied in a Jan. 6 joint session of Congress over which Vice President Mike Pence will preside. I imagine we’ll see some shenanigans from the Republicans during this session.
Then it’s on to the inauguration.
DR. JILL BIDEN:
A guy named Joseph Epstein wrote an opinion piece that appeared in the Wall Street Journal that caught my attention. He does not think Jill Biden should use the title “Doctor” with her name.
He opens his opinion piece with this:
Madame First Lady—Mrs. Biden—Jill—kiddo: a bit of advice on what may seem like a small but I think is a not unimportant matter. Any chance you might drop the “Dr.” before your name? “Dr. Jill Biden” sounds and feels fraudulent, not to say a touch comic. Your degree is, I believe, an Ed.D., a doctor of education, earned at the University of Delaware through a dissertation with the unpromising title “Student Retention at the Community College Level: Meeting Students’ Needs.” A wise man once said that no one should call himself “Dr.” unless he has delivered a child. Think about it, Dr. Jill, and forthwith drop the doc.
The Epstein column seems sexist. It did not go over well with many people and organizations. There seems to be a pattern from people on the right hating education and hating those who have actually put in the time getting their degrees. Remember, Trump gave us Betsy DeVos as the U.S. Secretary of Education. I don’t think DeVos ever attended a public school.
In my opinion, Dr. Jill Biden should continue to use the title “Doctor” that she earned through hard work. I’m sure whoever Joe Biden picks to be the next Secretary of Education will have her approval – and that person will be heads and tails better than DeVos.
REJECTED!
In case you missed it, late Friday night I wrote a column about the U.S. Supreme Court rejecting the latest attempt by President Donald Trump and his supporters to overturn the 2020 Presidential election.

ONE MORE THING:
I’ve been having some computer problems so if you don’t see my columns that may be the reason.
Maybe Santa will bring me a new desktop?
Have a great week!
