Caught My Eye…

A mistake that makes you humble is better than an achievement that makes you arrogant. -Unknown

Welcome to another exciting edition of Caught My Eye (CME)!

CME is the once a week column that is posted every Friday morning. This is when I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week.

Here are the topics that “Caught My Eye” this week:

  • Fox & Gianforte
  • Daines went down to Georgia
  • Ryan Zinke
  • Hunter Biden
  • Denis McDonough
  • One More Thing

FOX & GIANFORTE:

In my column yesterday I mentioned that, according to Reuters, Montana is one of the 17 states that threw their support behind a long-shot lawsuit by Texas seeking to overturn his election loss by asking the U.S. Supreme Court to throw out the voting results in four states.

Montana Attorney General Tim Fox is the reason for Montana joining this lawsuit.

If you follow me on Twitter, then you were one of the first to know that Montana’s outgoing U.S. Representative and soon to be next governor, Greg Gianforte, was one of the hundred or so U.S. House members who signed on as a “friend of the court” brief supporting the lawsuit.

Fox and Gianforte do have the right to do this, there’s no question in that. Since Fox is out of the AG job in January and Gianforte was elected Governor in a landslide, it’s also a safe thing for them to do. They can safely suck up to their base of supporters, many of who still believe the election was rigged.

As for me, I think it’s foolish and a waste of government resources. Most constitutional experts believe it will be thrown out rather quickly. I wish we had elected officials who were not so partisan. The country would be so much better.

DAINES WENT DOWN TO GEORGIA:

Steve Daines went down to Georgia
He was lookin’ for a soul to steal
He was in a bind ’cause he was way behind
And he was willin’ to make a deal

U.S. Senator Steve Daines (R-MT) sent a campaign email on Thursday asking supporters for donations because he was heading to Georgia today (Friday) to campaign for fellow U.S. Senators Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue.

Daines added this info:

Democrats have raised over $130 MILLION to flip Georgia blue and to make matters worse – recent polling shows Loeffler and Perdue LOSING to their Democrat opponent.

I have doubts that Loeffler and Perdue will both lose, but it would be a punch in the gut to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell if they did. McConnell would be the minority leader.

RYAN ZINKE:

I did not know that former Secretaries for the Department of Interior had official portraits. The Hill reports:

In his official portrait unveiling, Zinke, who famously came to his first day at the agency on horseback, is seen sitting atop a black and white horse, trotting through brush with a tree-lined butte in the background. The portrait is based on a photo taken of Zinke when he visited Bears Ears National Monument in 2017, a monument in Utah that was later shrunk by the Trump administration.

One thing that will accompany Zinke forever in any news story is something like The Hill reported:

The former Montana congressman had a controversial tenure at the department, ultimately resigning in 2018 amid numerous ethics investigations into his conduct.

You can read the full article and see the portraits HERE. They were funded through private donations.

HUNTER BIDEN:

Hunter Biden is the son of President-elect Joe Biden. Through the Biden-Harris Transition team, Hunter Biden issued the following statement:

I learned yesterday for the first time that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware advised my legal counsel, also yesterday, that they are investigating my tax affairs. I take this matter very seriously but I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I handled my affairs legally and appropriately, including with the benefit of professional tax advisors.

I’m not an attorney and I don’t even play one on TV, but my advice to Hunter Biden is to tell the U.S. Attorney’s office that his taxes are under audit. That worked with Donald Trump.

The righties have been digging for dirt on Hunter Biden for quite some time. This is what we have to look forward to for the next few years.

DENIS MCDONOUGH:

I am not too excited about President-elect Joe Biden’s announcement that he picked former Obama White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough to head the Department of Veterans Affairs.

I’m sure he is qualified for a lot of jobs, but one of the requirements I like to see in the leader of the VA is that the person served in the military. McDonough is not a veteran. Therefore, he has never tried to get VA benefits or use the VA healthcare system.

Many groups and Democrats liked the pick only because they lean left and whoever Biden picks is great. As an independent, I don’t see it that way. The fact is I am more qualified to be Secretary of the VA than Denis McDonough.
