Caught My Eye…

If it makes you happy, no one else’s opinion should matter. –Unknown

Welcome to another exciting edition of Caught My Eye (CME).

CME is the once a week column that is posted here every Friday morning. This is when I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week. There may be some sarcasm and pointed independent commentary so be warned!

Here are the topics that “Caught My Eye” this week:

  • Democratic National Convention
  • Steve Bannon
  • Montana Green Party
  • We Are Pawns
  • Goodyear
  • One More Thing

DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION:

The final night of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) saw Joe Biden accept the nomination for President and give one of his best speeches ever.

Frankly, Joe Biden showed that he will always be a better person than Donald Trump.

The star of the night was the master of ceremonies, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who had me laughing with every joke, like these:

  • Just remember, Joe Biden goes to church so regularly that he doesn’t even need tear gas and a bunch of federalized troops to help him get there.
  • Text VOTE to 30330. 30330 — that would be the President’s golf score if he didn’t cheat.
  • A fifth night has been added to the Democratic National Convention schedule where we will just play Michelle Obama’s speech on a loop.
  • Text VOTE to 30330 to learn about all of your voting options… An easy way to remember 30330 is that’s the year Donald Trump will finally release his tax returns.

Of course, many Republicans did not see the humor.

At the end of Biden’s speech, they (Jill Biden, Kamala Harris, and her husband, Doug) waved at the zoom crowd and went outside to see the fireworks display.

Read a transcript of the speech HERE. Watch it HERE.

STEVE BANNON:

The Associated Press (AP) is reporting that President Donald Trump’s former chief strategist, Steve Bannon, was pulled from a luxury yacht and arrested Thursday on allegations that he and three associates ripped off donors trying to fund a southern border wall, making him the latest in a long list of Trump allies to be charged with a crime.

Later in the day, it was reported that Bannon pleaded not guilty during an appearance in a Manhattan federal court.

Reuters reports that seven other Trump associates have either been charged or convicted of various crimes.

The Trump administration may be the most corrupt in history. At least Bannon has until January 20 to get a pardon.

MONTANA GREEN PARTY:

Lee Newspapers is reporting that Montana Secretary of State Corey Stapleton said on Thursday that he would ask the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse a Montana Supreme Court decision issued a day earlier affirming the Green Party should be removed from that ballot.

For background, Lee Newspapers reported that earlier this year, hundreds of people requested their signatures be removed from the petitions that qualified the Green Party. The requests, with help from the Montana Democratic Party, came after it became public that the qualification effort was financed by the Montana Republican Party.

In other words, the Montana Republican Party cheated. Now Stapleton wants to waste taxpayer money to fight a decision that won’t be overturned.

Until the penalties for cheating in elections are harsh enough to be a deterrent, we will always have people and parties trying to win by cheating.

WE ARE PAWNS:

A new meme going around the conservative circles says everything is political and that we should not be pawns:

I wonder if the 170,000+ dead Americans wonder if this is a hoax and that they were pawns.

Like I have said, the folks who pass these memes around are some of the most uneducated and gullible people on the earth.

GOODYEAR:

President Donald Trump called for a boycott of Goodyear tires this week after the company told employees to “refrain from workplace expressions in support of political campaigning for any candidate or political party.” (The Hill)

The Presidential limo uses specially made Goodyear tires. His campaign has a “Trump 2020” NASCAR that can only run Goodyear tires.

It’s a sad deal that Trump attacked an American company with 60,000 employees.

ONE MORE THING:

With passion and purpose, let us begin — you and I together, one nation, under God — united in our love for America and united in our love for each other.
For love is more powerful than hate.
Hope is more powerful than fear.
Light is more powerful than dark.
This is our moment.
This is our mission.
