Today’s independent commentary deals with these people/issues:

  • Great Falls School Election
  • Bullock vs Daines
  • Under His Skin

Facts finally won out in Great Falls. So did the children and the community.

The Great Falls Tribune reported a little after 9:00 p.m. that the $1.75 million elementary levy passed by a vote of 10,795 to 8,863. As for the trustees, the Tribune reported that Jan Cahill and Kim Skornogoski were re-elected and former city commissioner Bill Bronson earned the third open seat.

That is wonderful news. Congratulations to all those who worked so hard to get the levy passed and thanks to those who supported it.

There was some good news for Montana Governor and U.S. Senate candidate Steve Bullock (D) this week. A new poll from Montana State University shows he leads first-term U.S. Senator Steve Daines (R) 46% to 39%.

Of course, it was bad news for Steve Daines. If you dig deeper into the results then you’ll find some other troubling issues for Daines.

Two things that should bother Team Daines and reported by Montana Free Press are:

The results show Bullock is polling well among independents in Montana, commanding a 14-point lead over Daines, with 15% undecided. Bullock is leading Daines among women voters 52% to 29%.

The good news for Daines is the poll was taken in April. As you know, April is a long way from November.

The folks at The Lincoln Project recently released a new ad entitled, “Mourning in America,” depicting the newfound sense of helplessness and loss brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In case you don’t know about The Lincoln Project, they are a group of Republicans who want to defeat President Donald Trump. I have written about them before and support their goal.

The new ad got under Trump’s skin. The headline on an article from Chris Cillizza of CNN said:

Donald Trump just broke the most basic rule of politics

Cillizza also talks about the content of the ad:

“Under the leadership of Donald Trump our country is weaker and sicker and poorer,” says the ad’s narrator. “If we have another four years like this, will there even be an America?”

Trump went on a tweetstorm about the ad in the middle of the night and gave the group much more publicity than they would have ever received. I imagine the donations are flowing into The Lincoln Project and it’s all because of Trump letting it get to him. Later in the day, he went after them again.

Game, set, match to The Lincoln Project.
